WTF? Enlistment clock does not start until you are done with all training.
I was talking to a young fella who just came back from Viet Nam Iraq last month & he told me your enlistment clock does not start until you complete your training. Here's how it works:

You say: I'll do it for 15 months.
They say: Sign here, Suckah!

Off you go to boot camp for 12 weeks. Then you are off to another 20 ~40 weeks of training for your military specialty.

Now here's the important part: your enlistment clock does not start ticking until you join your unit after all training. :wtf:

2. He BS'd you
I think he was pulling your leg. If you sign up for 15 months (which would be something new), the military still owns you for a long time (I think its 8 years now). The clock starts clicking the day you show up for boot camp. And most military specialties do not take 20 to 40 weeks. Some do, but you will not get a short enlistment for a long school.

10. Actually the clock starts ticking as soon as you are sworn in.
Before you even get to lower your hand you are in the service and your ass belongs to the US government.

11. Not really
You can join under the delayed entry option, but the date on your ID card will be the date that you show up at boot camp. The bad thing is they own you for 8 years, even if you sign up for 15 months.

3. That must have been a change. My son enlisted in the Navy in 1986
I KNOW that wasn't the case then! It wouldn't surprise me that they slipped some changes into the fine print. I bet next to none of these recruits read all that stuff!

7. Well certianly
in 1986 we did not have a war in Viet Nam and we had not yet invaded Iraq under the mis-leadership of either Bush.

Our government can tell the truth when there is no advantage to lies, but will lie without a second thought if it is to their atvantage.

5. "Stop Loss" trumps any clause written into the contract
A 15 month contract can last a long time under stop loss.

8. makes sense in the current climate...
Although not ethical that these recruiters are not being upfront, they are probably doing this b/c they know they have no chance these days to get people to sign up for a 2nd tour. So they use tricks to keep them like the one you mentioned or extending tours, etc...

Its one of the many reaons that morale is fairly low these days in all the services, especially the guard.

9. Horseshit
Your enlistment contract starts the day you step foot in Basic Training. They will tell you it starts when you sign up for Delayed Entry Program, but you are only technically under a Reservist Status. The real deal starts with the first pushup in Great Lakes, Parris Island, or the army base of your choice.

This is true. It's when you meet the stress monsters in the brown smokey the bear hats when your actual contract begins.

13. It should be clear
that what is going on hear is deception on the part of recruiters. 15 months? did any here ever serve 15 months? Sounds like deception by the recruiter that failed to mention that 11 months of basic and specality school was not included.

Yes, the enlistment started at getting off the bus at basic, but the recruiter didn't explain that way, you know lying by omission.
