Should Democrats do a 'Contract To Restore America' before midterms?
Edited on Sun May-22-05 10:56 PM by Quixote1818
If so what should be on the contract to help us take back the House and the Senate?

A few possible things to throw on the contract:

1. Secure the borders (mainly because this is a winner issue big time)
2. Voting Machine Paper trails
3. Make Government more open and less secret
4. Restrict lobbyists in a big way
5. Get us out of Iraq as quickly as possible (not sure if that would help us or hurt us)
6. Term limits (just for Republicans):-)Just Kidding
7. Find all the money that is missing from Iraq and prosecute those who stole it (this goes for any scandal or missing money)
8. Reduce the number of Abortions by raising the standard of living of the poor (we will have to work on the wording of this one).
9. Better Environmental Laws such as reduce the amount of Mercury in water systems put out by corporations and reduce C02 emissions to help slow global warming
10. Some kind of moderate Universal Health Care program or at least insure 25 to 50 million who are uninsured
11. Allow more federally funded stem Cell research (questionable issue).
12. Roll back tax cuts on top 2% of population to get deficit under control
13. Re-instate equal time laws in news programs
14. Some kind of National Sex Offender law that would make people feel safer and less worried about their kids (People are more worried about Sex Offenders than Terrorists) this is a huge issue!

Any kind of security issue is important. Social Security, Medical Security, Security from sex offenders, homeland security etc. People don't want to have to worry about health, their retirement or their families and children.

7. I would love term limits
But who would we put out to campaign for this?

Ted Kennedy, Robert Byrd, Harry Reid?

This was one of the few things I appreciated about the GOP Contract on America, but soon after taking power they got drunk with it, and those term limit pledges seemed so unimportant.

8. I know what you are saying
I almost left it off. All we would have to to is get it up for a vote though and it would likely die.

We could throw that one out if people don't think it would help us.

9. #1: Preserve the Constitution and our civil liberties.
#2: Restore integrity to government.
#3: End government partnership with K-street.
#4: Replace Bush Medicare prescription benefit with one that is less costly, and that more benefits seniors, rather than drug companies.
#5: Remove sectarianism from science policy.

Lead with values that appeal broadly, except perhaps the religious right, who are the GOP's dedicated base.

10. contract
Edited on Sun May-22-05 10:26 PM by enid602
This is a good idea, but I don't see how we experience what we've been through, and not want to restore (or at least re-examine) the separation of church and state. We should at the very least consider revoking tax-exempt status for churches that excommunicate (or threaten to excommunicate) parishioners who vote for a certain party, or vote for candidates who vote according to their conscience with regard to hot-button moral issues. And religious leaders should not endorse candidates from the pulpit.

Could we call it the 'contract to save America,' or perhaps the 'contract to restore America?'

12. restore America
I think it's good (and ironic) to borrow from the previous 'contract for America,' and people will readily know who it was that made the restoration necessary.

14. A single "Clean Up Congress" pledge would do better.
1. Pass ethics rules with teeth.
2. No free anything for congressmen. No free travel, no free lunch.
3. Register contacts with lobbyists, and if you meet with lobbyists over a certain bill, register all contacts with that bill, and any suggested language submitted by the lobbyist.
4. End the three-day workweek in Congress. (I think adding an additional day would decrease the polarization and add to congressional power over the executive branch, but painting the GOP-controlled congress as lazy is always good.
5. End perks for special interests (pick 20 things that would piss off 75% of voters, and then go for one extra thing in each state that would piss off those voters).
6. Make a "Ten Most Wanted" list of subjects of investigation (Iraq contracts, media payouts, Enron loose ends). Here I'd go with the "looting" theme.

16. Er, uh...I would drop #14
Not because I feel particularly sympathetic towards sex offenders, but we don't require convicted murders, including those who kill their wives or children, to register with the government and have their addresses posted on Web sites and in newspapers.

17. Most states already have lists
Perhaps Dem's could just propose tougher laws? I don't think we should drop that issue because it actually rates above Terrorism. It's a HUGE issue for most parents of small children.

19. I agree. A more comprehensive, reality-based approach should be taken.
Should strive to identify what's "effective but not cruel".
