Laura: 'those awful photos have given the U.S. a bad image'
Edited on Mon May-23-05 07:24 AM by mopaul
on nbc with katie couric, the first lady said that it was those awful abu ghraib torture photos done by a very small percentage or our troops. and she was asked about the saddam underwear photos, and she said that our image is hurt by these awful photos.

so our worst enemy is the camera? the instrument that records truth like no other?

so there she is in front of the great pyramid and the sphinx, telling the arab world to just relax, democracy is on the way, let's all come together in subjugation to the u.s. and taking NO blame for our shitty world image, and blaming it on the awful awful camera.

1. What about the awful deeds done to the Iraqi people?
Small wonder she was heckled and mobbed on her latest "good will" trip.

What a horrible thing for her to say.

30. Apparently so...but I was on that stuff for a short while and
I wasn't that freakin out of it. This is just so sad for a First Lady to be so un/misinformed. But considering who she married, I shouldn't be surprised, I guess. I'm surprised she's not on something stronger than Paxil though.

5. No, Pickles. It's the DEEDS that gave the USA a bad image...
...the PHOTOS just made it impossible for her hubby and his minders to lie as completely as they would have preferred to about it.

9. ah, the unprovoked invasion of a Middle Eastern country wasn't it. Or
the prison camps or extraordinary renditions. It was the media that tarnished the US' image. Uh huh.

whatever medication she's on I could probably use for the rest of her husband's administration....

10. Blah blah blah
Laura, do us all a favor. Get out of the spotlight.

Your immature ramblings are NOT helping your husband. You are NOT Mrs. Clinton. You are not Mrs. Roosevelt. You are NOT Jackie Kennedy.

You are a common dime-a-dozen she-devil helping sponge every drop you can from this nation's taxpayers. You speak as if you are in the fourth grade, not as an eloquent, well-read, truthful wife of a World Leader( HA!!!!!!as if you're married to one). And you are a lousy mother because your daughters talk like nursery schoolers as well, rather than as educated, savvy young women.

Go back to your afternoon cocktails with the other Good Christians and leave the speeches to women who actually give a goddamn about this planet. You are an idiot.

14. "The instrument that records the truth like no other"?
Edited on Mon May-23-05 09:05 AM by kiki
A college lecturer once said to me: "The camera is a born liar." That stuck with me and is, I think, doubly appropriate in reference to the American media today. Obviously it has the potential to show us those hidden things we might never otherwise see, but we all have good reason to be wary of the "eye that feeds on death" (quote from a Japanese writer).

(This post has nothing to do with the Abu Ghraib pictures or Laura's comments or anything else like that. It's just a passing thought about cameras.)

...likewise the cheering Iraqi children, the falling statue etc etc...

But I do know what you mean. The camera's a funny thing... simultaneously the revolutionary's best friend, and his/her worst enemy. Depends on whose finger is on the shutter, I suppose.

21. Right. The problem isn't the torture
the problem is that people found out about it. That was Rumsfeld's first response as I recall. Banning cameras from the prisons or something?

22. well when the Commander In Chief talks about the Axis of Evil...
when Muslim Americans are being harassed in our own country, when Christian fundamentalists are discussing the evils of Islam...well who could possibly be surprised by the "actions of a very small percentage of our troops"?

This war may be for oil, but it's marketed as a Crusade. When our soldiers and our children are taught that every person from the Middle East is our enemy and when we have an Attorney General that promotes the use of torture then the horrific actions taken at Abu Ghraib are an obvious conclusion.

Until we change things here, it will only get worse there.

26. Those photos upset "her beautiful mind". Anything that exposes the
reality of the suffering that all republicans bring upon most of humanity is considered in poor taste.

They find that truth makes them uncomfortable. Having the fact that they are baby killers for jeebu$ on Wall St. thrown in their face gives them a slight twinge in what little they have left of their long ago abandoned consciences.

because he has banned cellphone cameras in Iraq.

The Iraqi people are grateful that they don't appear on photographs;now, if only they stop torturing the Iraqis, they will feel a lot better, don't you think?

35. You're SO right;
our "liberal" media supresses most of the photos that would "give people the wrong idea" about Operation Iraqi Freedom (like most things *ian, the name is meant to convey the opposite of what is actually happening). Um, where are the ones where the Iraqis are tossing bouquets at the troops??
