I'm mad!

It's all right for others to be angry with us here in the United States, but when we're insulted we put our heads in the sand instead of speaking out.

The Internet carried a statement by a group claiming to be al-Qaida in Iraq. They made themselves heard throughout the world insulting our secretary of state, Condoleezza Rice. So far I don't hear any outrage from anyone here in these United States. Not even a howl from our feminist groups, who are so quick to take umbrage at so much else.

Where are Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, who are so quick to defend the honor of athletes and actors? How can we condone such an insult to a representative of the United States of America?

Our Secretary of State was called a "hag" by a group of terrorists known to despise women of any race or creed. It is unreal to me that we accept any insult, yet if we insult others inadvertently we are quick to revile ourselves — even before others get a chance to do it.

There isn't much wrong with those meanings as far as I can see. Hag is quite a legitimate and descriptive term. It has been in use in the English language for centuries and I can see where someone might thing that term appropriate in the case on Condi Rice.

Now, the more vulgar term used a lot in America, the word "bi*ch", I would not be too eager to throw that at a U.S. diplomat, but for a SW Florida newspaper columnist save in her cloistered neo-conservative haven of Naples Florida and who is totally out of touch with the realities of the war and suffering in the middle east, that American vulgarism might be a most appropriate adjective.

You are quite right to point out what I consider the hypocrisy of calling out Jackson and Sharpton, and they CAN'T defend the indefensible, so I would expect them to challenge the sexist term as well.

Here's a way to think about this: what would we say about some leftwinger calling Clarence Thomas or Armstrong Jones "nigger" because of their harmful rightwing attitudes? We at DU should all have the SAME level of intolerance for calling rightwing women sexist names.
