Student reports Quran in campus toilet
Student reports Quran in campus toilet
No suspects or leads in incident at Delta College
By Greg Kane
Record Staff Writer
Published Friday, May 20, 2005

STOCKTON -- A San Joaquin Delta College student discovered a copy of the Quran in a library toilet Wednesday evening, an incident similar to one described in a now-retracted news report that sparked Muslim protests worldwide last week.

Delta police wouldn't release the name of the student, whom they say found the Muslim holy book in the toilet of a second-floor men's bathroom in the library just after 7 p.m. Wednesday. Sgt. Geff Greenwood said the student removed the book from the toilet and placed it on a bathroom shelf before contacting the police.
...
Wade Heath, an 18-year-old Christian student, said Delta is a culturally diverse campus and was surprised to learn about the discovery early Thursday. Heath is a Lutheran but understands why Muslims would be upset by the incident.

"If it was the Bible flushed down the toilet, I'd be angry," Heath said. "It's a total disrespect to somebody's beliefs."

2. Well, at least Heath gets it, unlike some DUers.
A lesser person would have left this unreported.

I foresee a wave of copycat Koran flushings. Not good - just more hate.

(Btw - what is the proper spelling?)

3. either..
Although most Muslims use Quran or Qu'ran. The arabic has no 'o' so qu or ku would be more correct.

5. It's a book
therefore I care

even if it weren't a holy book to some people, the destruction of any printed material has a disturbing significance

17. And toilets should be free too.
I'd be offended at anyone who puts any book in a toilet. Even books that I hate, because I think toilets all over the world should be free (of books.):patriot:

7. "One man's trash,
is another man's treasure." There has already been a lot of discussion on here about this. Why is it so hard for some people to just respect another man's beliefs? I'm an athiest but I can fully understand why someone would hold a book in such high esteem. Who cares if I don't agree with their beliefs?

10. My point was it's a book
A mass produced book, quorans, bibles, and torahs all get thrown out every day. The toilet is just a childish protest.

14. A childish act, yes.
I'm not sure this would qualify as a protest.

This looks like someone simply did it because they had heard about it and thought it would be "cool".

22. The toilet is where human waste, unrine and feces, goes.
It's a direct insult to throw something held dear by others into the toilet. The implications are quite insulting if one is a Muslim or if one respects the beliefs of others.

The behavior is more than childish, it's inciting and shows the lack of respect one has. If they are throwing books now, is that enough to quell their anger, or will they esclate?

12. I'm guessing about a billion Muslims?
Hey, I'm an atheist - I think every organized religion is wrong to consider its myths as factual truths - but there's something to be said for respecting other people's beliefs, as long as they don't throw them in your face.

If a Muslim, or a Christian, hit me with their holy book, I'd probably yank it out of their hand and throw it as far as I could, hard - but then I'd have been provoked.

Not going out of your way to destroy something sacred to others when leaving it alone wouldn't hurt anyone isn't a bad thing.

13. No it's not.
What is a bad thing is to react to a simple expression of free expression, no matter how offensive, with violence.

15. We're not in disagreement.
That doesn't make desecrating someone's holy book a great thing to do, of course.

16. No, it doesn't; however,
it's not like the Bible doesn't get desecrated in Muslim countries daily.

20. I fail to see how that's relevant.
Unless your point is "they do it, so we should do it too", which I would disagree with, since I *thought* we were supposed to be above that sort of thing.

that people can be so hateful. I may be an atheist, but I feel that each and every religion or set of beliefs have their own beauty.

9. Why does that student hate America?
Doesn't he know that by reporting this he has single-handedly destroyed our good relations with our friends in the Middle East? He should have kept quiet!

18. While Laura Bush tells the Middle East how much we respect their religion,
There are plenty of meatheads in this country to show them we don't. Do they think that people in the Middle East don't read or watch television? Conservatives are always so surprised when the things they do come back to bite them in the ass.
