Dear ******,
Last night, Democracy held fast against an onslaught by Republican extremists. In a victory for the American people, a handful of reasonable Republicans rejected the demands of their Leadership and worked to take the "nuclear option" off the table. The checks and balances in the Senate were preserved. Republican Leadership has been pandering to their extreme special interests, oblivious to what is best for the American people, but I commend these few Republicans for putting our democracy ahead of partisanship.
Unfortunately, here in the People's House, abuse of power from the radical right continues to run rampant. Whereas bipartisan efforts in the Senate have stalled the encroachment of extremists, House Republicans continue to be blindly led by one. It was Tom DeLay who threatened judges in the midst of a wave of violence against them and who declared that the only reason courts are able to protect our right to privacy is "because Congress didn't stop them."
Tom DeLay's continuing degradation of the separation of powers is just one more indication of his insatiable hunger for power. Democrats stood united with my friend Harry Reid in the Senate as Frist put his finger on the button for the "nuclear option" -- I ask you to pledge your continuing support to beat back the same kind of power grabs from Tom DeLay in the House and prevent future attempts in the Senate:
http://www.democraticaction.org/petitions/stopextremism.php The Republican Leadership has simply forgotten the American people that they are supposed to serve. As gas prices skyrocket, Republicans push through a budget that is filled with a bonanza of tax breaks for corporations and no relief to working people. They continue to push a Social Security privatization scheme that the American people have long since flatly rejected, even as pensions are slashed across the country on their watch. And yet they have wasted time and effort working furiously to insulate Tom DeLay from the ethical cloud that follows him around Washington.
This is lunacy. If no Republican will stand up to Tom DeLay as the handful of Republicans did to Senator Frist, it falls to us to do so. Last week, Democratic Leaders from the House and Senate came together in a show of unity against the rampant power grab Frist was pushing and its disastrous implications for decades to come. It was the grassroots efforts, public outcry and bipartisan leadership that allowed the Senate to reach an agreement. Today, I ask you to stand with us by signing your name to our pledge to continue to fight against these abuses of power in the House and the Senate:
http://www.democraticaction.org/petitions/stopextremism.php Here in the House, Tom DeLay is fighting for his political survival by sidling up to the same extremists who were dictating Frist's behavior -- and DeLay is threatening to wield them like a bludgeon against any Republican who would dare to question him.
http://www.democraticaction.org/petitions/stopextremism.php Apparently, it is of no concern to these extremists that every week a new ethical scandal breaks, or that the most recent disgrace involves an abuse of DeLay's position to kill an investigation into sweatshop conditions in a U.S. Territory.
This behavior was halted in the Senate this week, but continues in the House. DeLay will pander to the extremists again when he tries to kill a bipartisan bill to expand stem cell research. Again, it is of no concern to him that huge majorities of Americans support the promise of stem cell research to alleviate some of the most tragic ailments faced by humanity. As usual, he will manipulate the rules of the House to marginalize Democratic input, just as Frist had hoped to do. Evidently, there is no limit to what DeLay will do to save his own skin, and there is no Republican who will stop him.
On Thursday, the DCCC will deliver the names of everyone who signs our pledge for moderation from the Republican leadership in Congress to Tom DeLay and Bill Frist. I hope your name will be among them:
http://www.democraticaction.org/petitions/stopextremism.php As my friend and counterpart, Senate Leader Harry Reid said last night, "Abuse of power will not be tolerated, and attempts to trample the Constitution and grab absolute control are over. We are a separate and equal branch of government. That is our founding fathers' vision, and one we hold dear."
I hope you'll stand with us as we continue to fight to bring an end to the Republican majority rule.
http://www.democraticaction.org/petitions/stopextremism.php Sincerely,
Nancy Pelosi
House Democratic Leader
