So, I Have Been Working On This New Anti-War Gif Animation...
Edited on Thu May-26-05 03:05 AM by DistressedAmerican
Any thoughts or suggestions before I sent it out to the world?

Bushies call me a bleeding heart liberal! Well, let me tell you. My heart DOES bleed for these people! As do the hearts of all right thinking Americans.

Many Bush supporters probably also feel for the Iraqis. But their compasion ends with the beginning of the U.S.invasion which they see as the solution to these people's troubles.

How Sad!!!

As opposed to, say, the antifreeze in the bodies of many Repubs.

Excellent gif, DA. Every work of art you create shortens the war by at least one day, because somewhere someone will see it and be affected and join the voices speaking out against this atrocity.

1. Can you animate the blood drips on the edges of the heart?

2. Try animating the heart changing to solid red (at the end) by flowing the blood down from the top.

Very nice job, though!

29. Noble, but animated GIFs are the scourge of the WWW.
Edited on Thu May-26-05 09:37 AM by youspeakmylanguage
They are annoying, not to mention the fact that your one GIF is almost 800,000 bytes, almost a megabyte in size! Not only will it crash older browsers (a given if you incorporate it into a webpage), but dial-up users will find that downloading your page or e-mail slows their computer to a standstill and will most likely back out of your site or delete your e-mail. Hosting this image will also cause your bandwidth costs to skyrocket.

Again, it is a noble statement, but if you want your message to reach the maximum number of people with the least amount of negative technical difficulties, work on a series of smaller static images instead.

BTW: I have a weakness for the small animated smilies here at DU, but since any visitor will quickly learn to expect an insane amount of wasted bandwidth in signature lines, the ordinary rules don't really apply.

32. That's an incredibly elitest attitude for a liberal webmaster to have...
You may live in the "21st century", but many of your visitors are working class people who may have a slower second-hand computer and/or can't afford DSL or broadband. Some also may still live in rural areas where DSL or broadband isn't available. They're simply going to back out of your site and go elsewhere.

You may want to enter the 21st century (or at least 1999) when it comes to web design. Are you going for the nostalgic look with all of the frames?

problem free status. I have it and I enjoy it. Sorry if that bothers you.

My apologies to the dial up crowd and the Web Standards Project.

I guess it wouldn't be a morning around here without some "more liberal than thou" flames...

You are welcome to offer me some free design whenever you'd like.

I'm doing what I can to help the cause within the constraints of my broke ass, grad student, raising an infant existance...

BTW - I am also offering some of my free hosting to other artists that lack it is that makes you feel like I an not separating anyone from the digital means of production.

34. If you're creating the site for you and you alone, then you're set.
Edited on Thu May-26-05 10:23 AM by youspeakmylanguage
It's your site, not mine. But what bothers me will also bother those with similar limitations on internet accessibility. You're responsible for your own content and markup. If you want to make a site that is optimized to your own connection and browser settings, then you've created a little sandbox that no one else will want to play in. The people you are potentially bothering are those that might have an interest in what you have to say. Of course, you'll never hear from those people because they'll be gone in a flash.

Here are some free design tips:

1) Learn web standards.

2) Learn CSS 1.0 (the basics) and how to separate content from presentation.

3) Learn the basics of accessibility conformance. You don't have to go crazy and make your site black and white, but implementing the minimum requirements will allow disabled people to read what you have to say as well.

But hey, it's your sandbox.

35. I'm sorry that I somehow stepped on your toes by making a gif animation
however, your attitude is pretty far outside what I'd say my infraction calls for.

As I added to my last message. I am doing what I can. I am broke, finishing a Ph.D. and raising a kid. A year ago I never intended to have a site at all.

I apologize that within those constraints I have not had time to become a professional webmaster. I have made significant progress and have done some very good work for very good causes.

You show up and accuse me of elitism. Maybe you should step down off of your Web for the masses high horse and recognize that I am working like a dog and doing what I can.

All of the things you suggest are great in principle and among my goals. But Damn! How about a freaking particle of respect for what I have accomplished and am accomplishing.

Way to make yourself the Czar of web standards. Your goal is noble. However, maybe you could consider pulling the thorn out of your proletarian paw an inch or two.

Your message would get through a lot more clearly.

...or don't. I got snotty when you seemed to brag about your high-speed Internet access, and if that was your intention then I still say it's elitist. I could personally give a damn what your personal site looks like.

Learning and implementing web standards doesn't cost money. You can learn everything online through the W3C. It will SAVE you money in the long run when you have to start paying for your own hosting and bandwidth.

So it's a proletarian high-horse I ride when it comes to making the web accessible to all, but when it comes to making stores and work environments accessible to all it suddenly becomes a major progressive issue. Ask yourself how pissed you'd be if the local bakery, Wal-Mart or Big Boy had no access for wheelchair-bound customers or employees. How is this different for the sight-impaired?

38. My sandbox is a little larger than you give it credit for.
Edited on Thu May-26-05 11:05 AM by DistressedAmerican
I happen to make visual art to work against social injustice. That takes bandwidth sometimes. I wish it didn't. But it does. Again, my apologies.

As I noted in my original reply, I am working on a smaller bandwidth version. I am still developing it. i.e. Not done yet. I thought that I had acknowledged your criticism. Then you launch on me with crap like elitist for a little joke.

I happen to need high speed access for my education and work research. If that is elitist to you, Well, I guess tuition and books should be considered elitist too.

You seem to have a lot invested in this issue.

I just suggest that maybe I am not the person you should be venting on. I think you may be coming at it from thw wrong end.

Why not use some of that energy to work on the damn providers. they are the ones that keep decent access inaccessible. Not me.

While you are at it why don't you write a letter to the student loan folks. The interest rates and loan requirements are a far larger impediment to education than lack of high speed internet access (in my book anyway).

My university offers it to all of its on campus students (I out of pocket it as I live off campus). I just wish more people could afford to be here.

Learning and implementing (what you have decided are) "webstandards" may not take money. But, would you mind pointing out where I could find some more time?

Edited on Thu May-26-05 11:22 AM by youspeakmylanguage
Again you set me off with the "21st Century" comment. Each of us have our own pet issues and the "digital divide" is one of mine. I'm sure you have pet issues and if I made a comment that sounded elitist to you in regards to that issue, you would become upset too. That is a foible almost every DUer suffers from at one point or another.

If I haven't completely alienated you from web standards, then I would say again that you may want to start learning about them. From the way you describe your field of study, I think you could probably benefit more from learning web standards than some of the subjects you're paying big money to learn in the classroom. Releasing and presenting art on the web requires an in-depth study of standards to not only make your presentation accessible, but to also manage costs associated with bandwidth, which will become more and more of an issue as the Web (and XHTML) evolves to meet demand.

Start with the link in my signature line, then visit the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) site at http://www.w3.org/.

As far as time goes, we all wish we had more of it. It's a matter of using it wisely. I'm staying up late learning Ubuntu Linux at the moment. I wish I had more time to sleep.

I have every intention of doing the things you suggest. There will be further imrpovements and updates. I have not been alienated.

If my site makes you sad now. You should have seen it a month ago. Believe me this really is a big improvement.

Being a "broke-ass" myself, I can promise you that paying $40-65 a month for high-speed access is ridiculous unless you're using it professionally. Therefore once the university or school or whatever cuts you off expect to pay $20 a month just for basic dial-up and budget hosting.

I got snotty when you made the "21st century" comment. I have high-speed access at work, but I don't consider it a point of pride. I take pride in creating sites that almost anyone could access. My personal site is more heavy-ended than my other sites, but that is my sandbox and I designed it that way. If you're happy with yours, then by all means stick with it.
