is only that. It is a line drawn on a map by invaders from another time. It doesn not mean that on one side of the border lives the Iranians and on the other side, live the Iraqis. We do not know how many people live in Iraq that sympathize with the Iranian leaders or their people. We do know there are many Shiites and people that have very similar religious beliefs.
With that said, how much involvement do you think Iran has in the so-called "insurgent" movement in Iraq? Does the US intelligence community think the same thing? Is that why there are so many threats to Iran from this Adminsitration?
The border between Iraq and Iran is an old division based on the existence of the Persian peoples on one side and the Mesopotamians on the other.
Unlike Iraq, which is cobbled together at least three distinct areas, Iran is pretty organic for a state.
That is why invading Iran is an idiotic idea. Iran is not pretendingn to be an independent nation. Iran is not a slew of competing tribes and ethnic groups. It's a real nation that will fight an invader.
2. and when considering the dynamics of a military adventure
in Iran, it's worth remembering that a high percentage of its population is under 30 (fightin' age), so when you hear that there's 68 million people there, that number has a higher number of people in their prime years than you might at first imagine.
