Judge: Parents can't teach pagan beliefs - Christian Judge Says...
http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20050526/NEWS01/505260481/1006

Father appeals order in divorce decree that prevents couple from exposing son to Wicca.

An Indianapolis father is appealing a Marion County judge's unusual order that prohibits him and his ex-wife from exposing their child to "non-mainstream religious beliefs and rituals."

The parents practice Wicca, a contemporary pagan religion that emphasizes a balance in nature and reverence for the earth.

Cale J. Bradford, chief judge of the Marion Superior Court, kept the unusual provision in the couple's divorce decree last year over their fierce objections, court records show. The order does not define a mainstream religion.

Bradford refused to remove the provision after the 9-year-old boy's outraged parents, Thomas E. Jones Jr. and his ex-wife, Tammie U. Bristol, protested last fall.

3. WTF??!?!
This is absolutely UNBELIEVABLE.

If it were a matter of one parent wanting to teach paganism to the child and the other parent objecting I'd still disagree, but I'd at least understand how the ruling *could* come about.

This is incredible. What is happening to our country?

9. There's Obviously

more to this story than meets the eye. Why would this even be in the divorce decree if neither parent wants it there? Judges don't just make stuff up out of whole cloth and stick it in divorce decrees. Also, what are they calling "teaching pagan beliefs"? Something sounds fishy.

10. That's really wierd
I expected that it was a terms of the divorce settlement imposed by the other spouse, in which case, I'd say it was lousy for the kid but not something you could say a lot about. Instead the judge seems to have done it all on his own? Wierd.

And very activist.

11. If both parents believe in the silly superstition, what's the problem?
Who is this judge to say that his silly superstition is better than theirs just because it's "mainstream".

Amazes me that people are still insisting that some silly superstitions are better than others.

It's like the 15th century still...

I thought Americans were guaranteed freedom of superstition by the Constitution...

Yes he thinks it will (It will not)

This is how these people work, they really think they are doing the right thing, and damn those that say otherwise.
