Dubya's Excellent Week
A banner week for W:

John Bolton's nomination is blocked by the Senate;

The House of Representatives, defying the threat of a veto, passes legislation to fund stem cell research;

THE CAT BUTCHER fails spectacularly to end the filibuster;

Polls show voters' support of Bush at an all-time low;

Arlen Specter announces he thinks the votes are there in the Senate to override a Bush veto of the stem cell bill;

Iraq continues to be a disaster and a U.S. helicopter was shot down by enemy fire;

and

Despite an extensive campaign to many states, public support for the president's Social Security initiative is dead in the water.

6. Yes -- the Tillman story. And as for the numbers -- Gallup --
-- has him at 46% approve / 50% disapprove. Not good math for Bush.

Same Gallup poll gives Bush 58% disapproval on the economy, 56% disapproval on the situation in Iraq, and 59% disapproval on Social Security.

41. I'm with you on that long walk, MuseRider. I want a more civil --
-- country, and especially more civility among our lawmakers.

Right now that looks like it'll be a long wait.

But we have to start someplace. Dubya's only strength is his ability to divide people and turn segments of the population against each other.

Yuck.

Schwartzenegger's re-election seems a steeper climb.

Which is great.

Californians are not hogwild about Bush in the first place, and Arnold might suffer if he gets too close to the administration.

How great it would be to be rid of Delay in Texas and der Gropenfuhrer in California.

72. I'd pay pretty good money to hear McClellan interviewed by --
-- Helen Thomas, or Biill Moyers -- someone really good like that.

74. I like the way everybody helped create it as we went along.
New faces and old stalwarts both -- and not a syllable in favor of the Incumbent president!

78. Yes -- the legacy thing. Presidents are said to worry about it
and this president might be the exception to that rule.

His legacy right now looks pretty lousy.

Record number of job losses, a horrific war in the Middle East, hightened tensions with almost every other country on earth, a string of gutted civil rights protections, and the distant-but-stiill-possible hint of war crimes trials from rumored photos of U.S. treatment of detainees at Abu Graib.

Bad week. Bad legacy. Bad president.

81. Thanks to everybody who posted & an extra thanks for adding --
-- other points I originally missed in the original post.

It made the thread richer and more fun and more informative.

Thanks, everyone.

82. One more thing to look forward to
The mainstream media and their billionaire owners are getting nervous. I don't think things are going the way they planned. They're losing ratings, money, and investors because in the long run, warmongering is not cost effective (except for a very, very small number of people). Advertisers are looking to other venues for marketing campaigns. Even the military is turning on this neocon fiasco.

It may be overly optimistic, to say this but I think the tide may be turning. There will be a lot more fence-sitters showing up on TV and questioning the motives of Bush-Cheney,Inc.

Eventually, shows that expose the lies and ripp-offs of the Washington elite will start to gather the lions share of ratings. Advertisers that promote environmentally healthy products, especially products "Made in America" will acquire new and loyal customers.

Greed,arrogance and slaughter make for really bad PR.

Look forward to a growing media mutiny over the next 8-12 months.

85. Ok by me if the mainstream media finally realizes it has been used --

-- and lied to and manipulated and infiltrated and so on.

What shameless little hacks some of them have been. NPR included, at least to the extent that Tomlinson is actively seeking "a more balanced" view. Yuck.

Nixon crushed George McGovern and liberals despaired, but that second Nixon term was a watershed and I join you in hopes that this one will be a similar national experience.

And warm welcome to DU, too.
