FBI admits to persecuting political activists
Written by Staff Writer
Sunday, 22 May 2005

The FBI was forced to disclose documents that showed the bureau and local police engaging in intimidation of political activists today. The documents were released after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) filed a series of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests to obtain them.

The FBI is engaged in a well organized campaign of intimidating and improperly investigating law-abiding human rights and advocacy groups, the documents reveal. “Since when did feeding the homeless become a terrorist activity?" ACLU Associate Legal Director Ann Beeson asked. "When the FBI and local law enforcement target groups like Food Not Bombs under the guise of fighting terrorism, many Americans who oppose government policies will be discouraged from speaking out and exercising their rights."

In response to widespread complaints from students and political activists who said they were questioned by FBI agents in the months leading up to last summer’s political conventions, the ACLU filed FOIA requests in six states and the District of Columbia in December 2004 on behalf of more than 100 groups and individuals.

To date, the ACLU has received fewer than 20 pages in response to the FOIAs. The ACLU charged that the FBI is wrongfully withholding thousands of pages of documents, and today filed a lawsuit in federal court to compel the FBI to comply with the FOIA requests. The complaint seeks files kept by the FBI on the ACLU, as well as Greenpeace, United for Peace and Justice, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee.

1. Ouch! The WH plan to make anti-globalists and environmental
groups 'others' seems to be marching right along!

Sorry for you in the US.

6. This is a self fulfilling prophecy for the FBI. They will enrage others.
I am all for terrorists from PETA being looked into - especially if there are murder cases on the books involving activists. Are there?

Otherwise they are just picking on people.

10. they themselves said that there were no deaths, and that ALF and ELF went
out of their way to prevent them--and in the same sentence, the FBI said that they, not the abortion bombers and supremacists and Klansmen!
PETA terrorists nothing!

2. What a surprise.
..not.

They did the same to the Black Panthers, MLK, et al. They've been doing this for decades. Nice to see them caught at it (again).

7. I rarely post on the web anymore just because of this....
I even changed my name from 'liberal__________' to 'diogian' and I rarely post anywhere. I used to post on two sites frequently (read that as 'daily') but paranoia shut my mouth (or fingers, as the case may be).
I donate to GreenPeace, Mother Jones investigative fund, and the Democratic party. I even made the mistake of sending emails to the blackened 'white house' (don't do it!).
I'm sitting here right now wondering if I should hit the submit button... If you're reading this then I must be feeling particularly brave today. Later tonight I'll probably start feeling paranoid and wish I hadn't hit the submit button.
Que Sera Sera
Being just your average garden variety white trash, I don't meet the requirements to immigrate to Canada. Yes, I seriously looked into it. Even spent three weeks there last summer. So, I'll just have to make my stand here in right wing fascist amerika (lower case and spelt that way for my own amusement). Worse yet, I am in Okliehomer!
Hello intelligent liberal types -and- scumbag intelligence agencies who are presently datamining this site.

:P

9. I know what you mean
but feel my work on the environment and free speech is too important. If they are going to come get me for that, might as well not hide and spend my free time posting on the internet at progressive sites.

In for a penny, in for a pound.

13. All those organizations listed had at least one person breaking the
law with a bomb or by ramming a boat or some such illegal activism.

Unless you are such a person - you don't need to worry at all. They are looking for the terrorists.

So please don't be afraid. PETA has bombed places. Greenpeace has attacked other ships (it may not have looked that scary on the news - but you cannot get a permit to place yourself between a boat and what you are protecting).

It is the rule of law these people are interested in.

Not you. Not me. Not anyone on this whole site I would imagine.

14. Greenpeace has attacked other ships? I've seen them getting rammed
by government ships, but I've never seen the reverse. Got any links for that one?

Sorry, but imo it doesn't make them 'terrorists' to put their hides on the line for their beliefs. And that includes any government agency illegally harassing them, which is what the OP's article is about.

Greenpeace?

15. Oh all they need to do is break the law and the regulators can go
looking for them. Yes - I remember seeing a Kodiak boat(filled with air) ramming a ship. Was very scary.

there, I'm sure, and just called my senators and representative today to ask when they were going to address the Downing Street minutes/memo. Senator Kyl's receptionist/aide/whoever she was disclaimed any knowledge of said minutes. Riiiight.

11. Are any of us surprised?
Lessee, how does Democracy die again? To thunderous applause? Or by a shrug of indifference? Or maybe through the Big Lie, voting machine manipulation, and aggressive tactics against those whose political and ethical beliefs don't line up with the New Order.

If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it probably IS a fuckin' duck.

Thomas Jefferson said it best: "I have sworn upon the altar of God eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the mind of man."
