George W. Bush doesn`t care where he lies: Crawford Ranch, the Rose Garden, The Vatican, in a flight suit, in his pickup truck, at the United Nations. You name the place and I`ll name the lie. Yesterday`s location was the Arlington National Cemetery. Tomorrow`s location could be anywhere from Uzbekistan to an old growth forest. As long as Karl orders up the appropriate prop, Dubya will grab the headlines. A flag pin and a big floral wreath can go a long way....even if you`re an AWOL Commander in Chief.
Yesterday Bush described the United States as a "reluctant warrior" in spite of his stated pre-emptive first strike policies. I imagine millions of Americans nodded in approval as they clung to the belief that Bush`s rhetoric matched reality. Even Ted Koppel`s reading of The Fallen won`t shake Bush`s message. We`re the world`s Peace and Freedom Experts. We have all bases covered. Reservists willing to do two or three tours in Iraq with the solid support of non-military experts like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. It`s a beautiful thing.
I`ve noticed something a bit odd. Bush loves to "honor" America`s soldiers, past and present with speeches about the Greatest Generation and the brave men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan. What`s missing is an in-depth tribute to those who fought and died during the Vietnam War,his generation`s war, a war he almost never mentions. A curious omission, but perhaps it`s Rove`s way of enabling Bush to skip over the AWOL part and focus on the Born Again section. In my eyes, the stench from George Bush`s lying mouth defiles real sacrifices so foreign to his history of privilege.
