What would you do?
I have 10 puppies to give away.
I am aware that there are Pit Bull breeders around this area that use little puppies as "bait".
I just had a lady call and want all 10 puppies.
That seemed pretty odd to me.
I asked what she was going to do with 10 puppies, she said she just loved dogs.
That just didn't sound right, so I told her that I couldn't give them to her.
What would you do if you really needed to give away these puppies?

2. no way!
That sounds super-fishy to me. I'd be sure to check vet & personal references of any potential adopter.

3. Are there any PetSmarts in your area?
You can meet up with the Humane Society and adopt them out. I wouldn't give them away free to anyone you don't know. You were right to turn this lady down.

4. We don't have anything like that
Best options here are to put an ad in the paper or go to the WalMart parking lot.

5. You have to market them in a cute way.
I had a bunch of kittens once back when Cabbage Patch Dolls were big in the 80's. I marketed my kitties in the local paper as "Catnip Patch" kittens and did up adoption certificates on my "word processor" at work. I then charged $5.00 a piece for them but also gave a box of kitty chow too. I had people fighting for them and I was much more able to choose who they went to. Gone in 2 days.

Definitely fishy on the puppy thing - I wouldn't let her near them. She's going to sell them for research or something.

6. No, I'd be sure she doesn't get any of them
better to be safe. I love dogs too, but very few people, if any, could justify taking 10.

7. Don't give them away.
Check references, draw up a contract that says you can take back the dog if your conditions aren't met. Require spay or neuter. Charge a fee. It can be as little as $5 but people seem to take better care of things they have to pay for.

This woman sounds like a buncher...a person who collects animals and sells them to research facilities.

33. I got my dog at a Pet Co adoption day and, believe it or not,
they actually followed up and came to my house to see if it was adequate for the dog before they let me have her. I was impressed.

12. If your pups are a particular breed, find a rescue society.
Edited on Thu Jun-02-05 03:34 PM by Straight Shooter
Whatever you do, don't give all 10 pups to one person. That woman is either criminal, or she's insane, or she's both. She'd probably sell them all to a lab.

Take care. Try your luck with the Humane Society, even if you have to drive a distance. Good luck with the pups.

edit: by "lab" I mean a science or university laboratory that experiments with dogs as subjects

Look a little like baby labs, or lab mixes (esp. the 2nd blackie). In any case, they are surely adorable. I want all 10 too.

23. You can have them
:)
Seriously, they are lab and cocker mixes.
There are laws against using them as bait.
Problem is, it's hard to enforce in the backwoods of Texas.:(

18. They are so cute!
I would not give them to that woman. Either she is going to try to sell them to a laboratory or to the pit bull fighters or who knows what.

You know, when I first read your post, I thought it said "guppies" and I couldn't figure out why pit bull breeders would use guppies as bait. :silly:

21. Are there any laws against using puppies as bait?
The reason I ask is that you can ask callers about their intentions about the dog, then get their phone numbers, addresses, and whatever other information you might be able to think of to "pile on" (where they work, for example and work number) and then tell them that the reason you need all that is that you'll be following up on the puppies and probably even coming to visit to make sure they're okay -- that no way do you want THESE puppies used as bait for pit bulls, as some people do.
And, I can't believe there's not SOME statute that covers such horrific nonsense, you can mention that more casually. "After all, it IS against the law in addition to being horrifically inhumane."

24. I had no idea they existed
but there is a lady I know from an area humane society (they aren't accepting dogs right now though) and she told me to be careful when people came for them because of that.
Had I not been aware, I probably would have believed the story I was given.:(

25. What sweethearts!
If I didn't have a husband, a pit bull, and a full time job, I could see myself wanting all 10 of those darlings. Daizie doesn't like other female dogs, and my husband won't allow me to become one of those crazy ladies with too many pets, dammit.

As a pit bull owner and lover, it horrifies me that people breed and train them for fighting, but I had no idea that puppies were used to bait them! Those people should be rounded up and drafted. It breaks my heart that young Americans and sweet puppies die because politicians and dog breeders are assholes who want to show the world how effing tough they are.

Pardon the tangent.

You may want to think about having the mother and father of the pups spayed and neutered so you don't end up in this predicament again.

She had an appointment to get spayed.
However, we only have one vet and she was impregnated before she could make her appointment.
It will happen this time though, lol.

31. Go to YahooGroups.com and search for animal rescue
groups in your area. After registering with Yahoo and the groups, you can post about the puppies. The messages go out to other members in a daily digest or individual e-mails. I have found homes for 3 cats this way.
