I actually did not know that an airliner transponder had the capability to sent out a 'hijack alert'.

So, what happened on 911? If I was a pilot, I would have pressed the 'hijack alert' button. Not only one airliner, but three - three alerts were sent out(?).

I would figure at least one of the two Trade Towers airlines would have sent the signal.

Which brings to my attention - why did the FAA not alert NORAD and send up the fighters? Why did the tapes at the FAA get destroyed?

What a bunch of bull shit. The worst disaster in American history to hit mainline America and the FAA DESTROYED EVIDENCE?

It is just one more inconsistency and, I would say, is further evidence of what this administration did to kill 3000 Americans on 911.

All planes equipped with a transponder (which is most, even small planes and helicopters) "squawk" a certain frequency. That way ATC can keep track of not only where they are, but who they are. If the plane is hijacked, the pilot is supposed to dial up 7500 and hit enter (or ident.) and ATC is alerted.

DoT recommendation...to examine all options for setting and locking in the hijack code (7500) via the transponder control panel ID selection, so that hijackers cannot disable it. The group was also tasked to look into a "panic button" that initiates the hijack code in an emergency situation and an independent transponder that cannot be disabled. DoT added that while such new features could require a major redesign, it had "learned of possible modifications that could be accomplished more quickly."
