Anti-rape device created

An inventor in South Africa has come up with a possible solution to end the country's unenviable reputation of being the rape capital of the world.

It is estimated a woman or girl is raped every 26 seconds in South Africa.

But inventor Sonette Ehlers says women will soon be able to wear a device which would attach itself to the rapist's penis by microscopic hooks as he withdraws.

Ms Ehlers says the device is expected to go on sale by the end of the year.

"The rape device is a condom, it's shaped almost like a tampon," she said.

"Hollow inside and the inner wall of it is lined, and there we have got all our technology and little hooks which, upon forced penetration, will attach to the skin of the perpetrator and only a medical doctor can remove it.

and I was surprised that so many DUers opposed this device. If I was a woman at risk I would see it as a Godsend.

Once word spreads, it should make would-be rapists think twice.

security in many places is virtually non-existant and the population is already condemned by AIDS. But the bigger point to me is the myth believed by a lot of South African men with AIDS, which is that the disease can be cured by having sex with a virgin. As a result, many young girls are raped.

I think I'd normally agree with you, but in this case the situation is so dire that anything that can bring the infection rate down is alright with me.

I suppose a rapist might "probe" with their fingers first to check for these devices.

I love the idea of a rapist running away in pain and horror, though.

And the rapist will be even more infuriated when he finds one of these on his victim. This will solve nothing.

Besides, the damage of rape has already been done by the time this ludicrous device could ever be used. I agree wholeheartedly that education/equipment to PREVENT the rape from even happening should be the focus of efforts to quell the problem of rape in South Africa.

Unexpected backlash #1! If this device becomes widespread throughout S. Africa, you can expect that sexual assaults won't significantly decrease. Why? Because rapists will simply start sodomizing as opposed to violating vaginally. The dimwit who invented the "vagina dentata" should have NOT publicized this device. That way, criminals wouldn't have known about it, and it would have been much more effective. Perhaps the most damning aspect of all of this is that, as someone else so aptly pointed out, an anti-rape device already DOES exist. It's called a .45 - remember, support the rights of law-abiding citizens to own firearms, no matter what country you reside in.

to prevent rape, including any number of personal protection devices and the MOST effective method: ALWAYS being careful and observant, and never putting yourself in situations that can cause you harm.

And these methods will STILL work when rapists "work around" this ridiculous device.
