5 Marines Killed in Iraq; 21 Bodies Found By PATRICK QUINN,

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Militants killed five U.S. Marines and authorities found 21 bodies Friday near the Syrian border, where American and Iraqi troops bore down in two recent major operations aimed at crushing a tenacious insurgency.

The victims, thought to be missing Iraqi soldiers, were shot repeatedly in the head and found blindfolded, their hands tied behind their backs. Three were beheaded.

The killings were a clear sign of the profound difficulties faced by U.S. and Iraqi forces in Anbar province around the dusty, lawless frontier town of Qaim, and their inability to seal the porous desert border with Syria despite major efforts to boost their military presence in the area.

~snip~

The Marines were killed Thursday in a roadside bombing while conducting combat operations near the volatile Sunni town of Haqlaniyah, 90 miles northwest of Baghdad, the military said. Their deaths brought to at least 1,689 the number of U.S. military members killed in Iraq since the war began in March 2003, according to an Associated Press coun

6. Nationwide, enormous anger built slowly over Vietnam

I think it will be the same with Iraq, whether there is a draft or not. Unless I'm missing it, the corporate media is currently not covering the fact that parents of some who have been killed in Iraq are outspokenly opposing the war; I have met some at anti-war rallies in D.C. I don't know how organized those parents are.

And there are no pictures yet, pictures of the maimed and dead are rarely being shown if ever...TV really brought Vietnam into peoples' living rooms.

This needless war is horrible.

31. An overwhelming number of parents who have lost children
Edited on Sat Jun-11-05 06:08 AM by katinmn
are speaking out against the war. I'm aware of only one time when Bush had a closed door (no press allowed) meeting with a handful of parents who lost children. I'm sure he did all the talking.

As an aside, Minnesota Senator Becky Lourey, who recently lost her 40 something son in Iraq, was part of a group who hand delivered a resolution to Chimperor asking him not to wage war on Iraq.

Becky's a strong progessive and well respected in the MN legislature. I think when some time has passed for grieving she will be in Chimp's face in a big way.

4. At least 2,000 dead U.S. soldiers before people really pay attention.
If it gets up to 3,000, I think a lot of Americans are going to go on the warpath, especially if Iraq remains as FUBAR as it is right now.

I personally don't believe we have a snowball's chance in hell of turning this thing around. bush opened Pandora's box, and hope will not fly out this time. She's dead.

5. It took nearly 14 years and 30,000 dead to jump-start the antiwar....
...movement during the Vietnam War.

Using that model, it will be 2017 before the antiwar movement takes to the streets to demonstrate against this war.

22. This is about right
since Vietnam ended up with 58,000 U.S. casualties. But I wonder how you get "14 years" to jump-start the anitwar movement, seems a bit long to me. I guess you must be measuring the start of the war for the U.S. from France's loss at Dien Bien Phu (1954).

Also, it seems to me with this Iraq war just over 2 years long and just under 2,000 U.S. dead, we could fairly see it as a 1,000-a-year- dead war. If so, we'd have to get out to, say, 2033 before people would get mad, using your 30,000 figure.

Of course, as others here say, its all about the draft - once that hits, (if that hits), people will be in the streets.

11. Michael Fasnacht was the 23rd Minnesotan to die in the Iraq War (pic)
http://www.startribune.com/stories/1762/5450843.html

Slain soldier from Mankato described as go-getter

Michael Fasnacht, 25, an Army Ranger from Mankato, Minn., was killed Wednesday in Iraq after being hit by a remote bomb while on patrol, his mother, Marny Fasnacht said. "When he decided to go into the Army, he chose the special forces because he wanted to train the hardest, test himself and give the absolute most for his country," Fasnacht's aunt said.

Fasnacht graduated first in his basic-training class. He told family members proudly that he had never lost a man in his unit. During a visit home last summer, he excitedly told his aunt that he earned the highest score on an Army rifle range and was fastest during a rope-climbing drill.

In a letter to his older brother, Sam, that was read on the air by a Mankato TV station, Michael Fasnacht wrote: "I have R and R leave in a few more weeks and then when I come home I have only four months left until I can come home for good."

Fasnacht was based out of Fort Benning, Ga., went into active duty in 2003 and became an Army Ranger a year later. Fasnacht's body is expected to be returned to Minnesota this weekend or early next week.

I despise Americans who support Bush. They are accomplices in the war on poor people in Iraq.

Iraqis are living without the bare necessities, without medical care, electricity or clean water. Without schools, jobs, and a sense of security, or hope for the future. We have taken it all away and left them grieving.

And what have they done to us? Nothing! Absolutely Nothing.

What is wrong with America?

that they are dying for lies, more soldiers will die.. and those who believe Bush will tell themselves they are safer with each death.

in too many American minds, it's their safety pitted against some strangers death....

nevermind the safety is a lie....they can 'feel' safe, wave the flag, and "support the troops"...all from the comfort of their homes.

They are cowards. Not because they don't enlist....but because they refuse to take responsibility for a corrupt government.
