2. It lets Bush say 'they're not reasonable so, recess appointment'
Childish but, within his powers as commander in chief.

4. Yeah, But Are Recess Appointments Permanent?
I thougth they were only temporary appointments and that eventually the appointment will still have to get Senate approval.

5. He'd be in until January 2007
While temporary, it will give him plenty of time to do his damage.

10. I may be wrong, but
although the reccess appointment is temporary (that is, until the end of the Senate's next session), after it runs out the Senate has to vote on confirming him. That is, filibustering him after the temporary recess appointment runs out is pointless, since he is already occupying the position unless the Senate fails to vote to appoint him permanently.

11. Nope, It's Not Pointless
That's exactly the point; Not having him appointed permanently. The Senate STILL has to approve his appointment, eventually and the Dems can still block it (though admittedly after much damage is already done).

12. I don't think the Democrats in the Senate can "block" his appointment
Edited on Tue Jun-21-05 01:00 PM by Internut
after he is already recess-appointed. The only thing they can do is vote him down in the confirmation vote - and that would require the majority in the Senate.

13. Nope, He'll Have to Go Through The Same Process
The Repubs will need closure (60 votes) to confirm, just like now...

14. You're missing my point -
yes, he will have to go through the same process, but whereas right now he is NOT holding the position, next time, WHILE he is going through the process, he will STILL be the UN Ambassador. So the Republicans can let Democrats filibuster him forever - he will still be holding the position.

15. I'm Not Sure About That
But you could be right. It's possible when his term is up, the position will be vacant again until he is actually confirmed (or recessed appointed again).

8. Protecting The Congress
I think it is time for Congress to stay in session for the 4th of July to show the United States democracy at work against a President, who would use the time to dictate his own agenda no matter what. As President, he wants to keep bypassing safeguards in our Constitution. If Republicans can force Congress into adjournment, then they are in collusion with a White House. If they then use this time to bypass Congress on every American holiday. So every holiday the executive branch becomes the congressional branch of government. The White House must promise ahead of time to the American public its faith of three branches of equal powers of a Constitution.

9. Say NO to a recess appointment!!!
Bolton may not be getting in now, but everyone must stand firm to Dick Cheney's dispicable plans in order to put Bolton in by recess appointment. That means get all of congress to absolutely block the motion.
