I was laid off from my job this morning!
I used to work at ADP for close to 5 years. I even made the move from Silver Spring MD, to Alpharetta Georgia, when the department moved in June 2001. Today, a few of us were called into a conference room getting the word that they were making budget cuts, and had to cut some positions. All-the-while, ADP is training and opening up an office in India.

My wife and I are still celebrating the birth of my daughter, who is now 5 weeks old. Please keep us in your prayers, as I go out an trying find another job.

Thank you
Tim

9. Good luck, but this may not be as bad as you think.
These things often work out for the better in the long run. My husband and I have both been through job lay-offs, and in every case, we wound up with a better situation later on.

If you've ever thought about starting your own business, doing some writing, doing consulting work from home, etc., now's your chance to give it a try. I did, 18 years ago, and never looked back. My husband got out of a pressure-cooker situation and into a new firm where the people are much nicer and the pay is better, too.

Times are tough, but there's always room for qualified people.

I hope things work out well for you. Good luck!

83. you're welcome!
This could also be a time to go back to school, if you've got any inclination to get retrained in something else. At least you can collect unemployment while learning a new field.

Be sure to ask for a letter of reference from your supervisor, before they disappear.

11. You have my best wishes
My husband also lost his job in April, here it is end of June and he is still without a job. He struggles with this every single day and it's heartbreaking to see my wonderful, strong husband who put in over 20 years for his country, retired 2 years ago with a great job, now working his tail off to find gainful employment.

I do feel your pain, anxiety and uncertainty. My best to you and your family. Please keep us posted on your progress.

16. Been there, done that and I can't tell you how much I sympathize
and empathize with you. Hang in, hold your daughter and know that things will change.

If I can give any advice, it would be to treat the job search as full time employment. Your new job is getting a new job. If you find that things don't go quickly, take a part time something--anything to get you being productive even if it's greeting at Grandy's.

75. One more piece of advice:
Take a few days off, maybe two weeks. Real time off, no guilt, no panic, no fear. Won't be easy, but you need to do it. If you interview right now you will either be angry or bruised and it will show.

Never interview while you are still bleeding.

If you have an appointment and suffer a sinking spell, reschedule. It shows confidence (even when you are really short on that commodity) and you wouldn't get an offer anyway in that altered state.

90. That IS good advice
Your story sounds so much like what my family went through in 1993.

My husband got laid off five days before the birth of our second child. He did treat the employment search process as a job. It took a few months, but something did finally come through.

Don't give up. Don't get discouraged. Things will work out for you and your family. You'll be in my thoughts.

108. Paychex is based in Rochester, NY
come on up. We'll welcome you with open arms. Although, I am sure that there are other offices of Paychex the headquarters are here.

I also was laid off from what I thought was a great job. As it turned out, after 10 months of no luck I landed a new job that is a much better fit. I really enjoy this job, and I work nights too. It's not too bad when you get used to it. Keep your options and your mind open. I NEVER thought that I could function while working an overnight shift, but it's quite enjoyable. We can watch the office politics from afar and just do our work.

Best of luck, cherish that baby. They grow up so fast.

21. Believe that everything happens for a reason.
I've been downsized twice in my life.

Once during Poppy Bush's administration.

And once during Shrubs.

However, both presented additional opportunities that I would not have explored otherwise. (The first time I went to college, the second time I started my own business)

Give all your love to that new baby, give Mommy some rest, and enjoy some time with them while you're hunting. You'll look back on it as a blessing, trust me!

and your family.

I pray for someone who cares to win every election, overcoming voting machines and the apathy in this country.

I know that God won't make this happen, people will, and it's places like DU that give us hope to keep fighting the good fight. I just hope God gives me strength to keep spreading the work about this administration in a way that does not offend, but changes minds.

My prayers for your strength and thankfulness for new life!

Having been there I know this. So enjoy the opportunity of some time with your new baby.

I lost my job in September and it has turned out to be a blessing, I am in the process of starting a small home business which is something that I've been wanting to do.

Keep your thoughts positive and look on it as an opportunity, you know that old saying when one door closes another one opens.

Seriously. 5 years is long enough to work for one company. You have a new baby and and a whole new life. Don't be afraid to let go of the familiar or the security of what you know. This could be the best thing ever. Your boss let you go because you fell in the bottem X% of the group. If you really loved what you were doing there you would have been in the top. Maybe there is something else you would rather do? Anyway goodluck to you! I know the market is tough out there. But you can do it!

As I like to say, Welcome to life in the 21st century. The corporation doesn't give two sh*ts about the common man or the man that does all the work while their 520%-of-what-the-grunt-makes CEOs can bask in their sick piles of money.

60. Damn Tim... I'm So Sorry !!! - Best Of Luck !!!
Happened to me after 9-11. Had my fantasy job making great money working on a computer network. After 9-11, most of the company was laid off. Took 14 months to get a job, so don't relax on your unemployment too long, LOL!!!

Happy B-Day to your daughter, and hang in there. I hear it's better now, than it was when I was lookin for work.

64. My company used to use ADP for payroll, then switched to Oasis Outsourcing
They let our HR guy go and now we are technically employed by Oasis, even though we still work for our company. A lot of us were bothered by the shift, as well as the "outsourcing" name. It's been about 3 years, and no real problems yes, but I wonder if a lot of people switching to Oasis has been a problem for ADP?

66. Tim, from another Georgian
(Atlanta)you'll be fine. I've been laid off several times due to downsizing. And so has my husband. It's painful. But you'll be fine. And even stronger than before. I hate so much that this is happening to so many wonderful people. There just is no security. But you must be a very fortunate man. You have a family who loves you and a beautiful new daughter. And you have a supportive group of DU friends, also. Keep in touch with us.

68. The NeoConomy takes another one!
Unbelievable. Trust me, in 4-5 months, this will be the best thing that ever happened to you.

In May 2001, the place I work for had their IT department taken over by an MBA ladder-climber - cut HALF of the IT department without batting an eyelash. I was one of them. I was pissed, believe me, but then I thought . . . "I've been working since the age of 16 (I was 32 at the time) pretty much NON-stop, even during college. I've not had any time off whatsoever in 16 years . . . most I got was 2 weeks, and that was between looking for jobs when I was in my 20s." So I had a great summer to myself for once. I was antsy for a bit in September, because collecting UI was getting old and I can't stand not having a paycheck. All of a sudden, after five months of nothing, I got two offers from banks, one of which paid 9,000 more than what I was making previously.

Took the job in October, have been here ever since.

If someone like me, with relatively little experience under their belt can get something in THAT lousy scenario (all of the applicants I was competing against were ALL laid off from their jobs, as I later found out), keep thy chin up and good luck. Things are going to get better sooner than you think.

Enjoying the summer might actually take some of the pain off. It did for me.

69. I'm sorry to hear that...
...this could happen to a man with a new family to support. I tend to think of myself a lot-since * took office, two places that I've worked at have either been "bought out"/taken over (merger) or closed. I used to be a chemist when I actually had a job to go to. Now I've got almost another year before I finish my medical technology program that I am in-I'm trying to cross-over into the healthcare laboratory from the industrial laboratory (you need a special certification/license to work in a clinical/hospital laboratory-this is the "MT" after a name, meaning medical technologist). Now, chemical/pharmaceutical jobs are going to India and China, just like your job, and research positions are opening up all over Europe, since so much funding for any kind of research to actually help anybody get well (e.g., stem cell) has basically dried up thanks to *. I'm 36 years old, and there's a lot of things that I would like to do rather than going to school. My thoughts are with you-it puts things in perspective to know that there are people who have it worse than myself. Just try to think hopeful-and make sure that you get every unemployment check to the last penny that you can collect. You deserve it. Take some time to be with your new daughter and wife. I really wish you all the best.

79. try NYC/Northern NJ/Connecticut
I think there's work in DC metro area, too. Dont go to Dallas or Midwest. There's work opening up ... lot of financial places looking for computer folks. Competition is there but recruiters are answering their phones and people are having real interviews.

Look for work from 9-5 M-F(take 1 1/2 -2 hour lunch -- you deserve it).
Enjoy your daughter. Make this time a special time with your wife and daughter.

Stories like yours are part of the reason we are Democrats. You and your family are people who have taken the time and expense to get an education, and develop valuable skills. What a shame that business have gotten so greedy that they are willing to sell Americans out in order to enrich themselves.

I know having a new baby is wonderful, and stressful at the same time. You will certainly be in my thoughts and prayers, and I'm hoping that you get a good job right away. Congratulations on the new baby girl.

Not that my advice is worth anything, but when I had a similar experience in 1979, I started my own small company...which is still small but has been more than enough for me these years. You MAY want to consider trying it...although you have more responsibilities than I did when I did it. In any case, wishing the best for you.

Try to make the time between jobs a special time to bond with her.
You won't have this same opportunity to spend time with her when you are working full time. It's a gift in disguise.

Many of us in high-tech have been laid off. It is not a good feeling, but you have to stay positive and make good use of the time to take stock of what's important.

Keep in mind its a marathon and not a sprint.

I should know too because on April 3, 2003 I fell down a flight of steps and broke my ankle in 3 places. I could not walk for a year and had 3 operations on my foot.

Did my job support me at all? No they let me go after 1 month. In fact they threatened to fire me a few days after I fell if I didnt get into the office. What saved me is they felt bad when I wound up in the hospital with an infection in the wound and a temp of 103...

Needles to say I am STILL trying to find work as an attorney here in Lower New york state. Even though I am very frustrated I still try to keep positive and have even set a deadline on myself to find a job in law by a certain date or return to school for a masters degree in something else I enjoy

115. We'll think of you when our phone rings...we love sales calls from
India. My husband is a Social Studies teacher, and is incredibly familiar with much of the world. When we get a call from someone with an Indian accent, I pass the phone to him. He is very friendly, and asks them about details of their country with which he is familiar. After things get schmoozy, he says, So, tell me, how would you feel about this? You come into work tomorrow, and you are told that you no longer have a job because your job is moving to America. How will you feed your kids? Well, think about it. We don't buy anything from companies who steal American jobs.

God Bless You.
