When the flag burning issue is debated...
Edited on Wed Jun-22-05 01:22 PM by Kelvin Mace
repeat the following until the morons get it thorough their thick skulls:

When a symbol of liberty becomes more important than actual liberty, America has ceased to be a free nation. Better our enemies burn a million flags than our leaders rape the First Amendment.

First posted it here:

But it was a variation:

s I've said before and I'll say again, when a SYMBOL of liberty becomes more important than ACTUAL liberty, this nation will have completely turned against the very principles held dear by the Founding Fathers.

Burning a flag is better than pissing on the Constitution.

I though it better to "clean it up" for the delicate eyes of the Christian Jihadis™.

Edited for clarification.

7. Thanks.
I know how politicians only speak in sound bites and I was trying to come up with something for their limited cranial capacity.

10. Did you catch the flag burning on the Daily Show?
Not a video of flag burning by demonstrators, rather as a part of a Rob Cordry skit? Rob holds a sparkler in one hand and an American flag in the other, switches the sparkler to the flag hand while reaching for his wallet, the flag bursts into flame. It was priceless.

that East Blogistan didn't use it as an opportunity to start the Smear Machine up and go after Jon Stewart.

Edited on Wed Jun-22-05 02:30 PM by gatorboy
And they know it. That's why they bring them up every time an election comes up.

18. They work unless we fight back.
I really wish these people would stop with this "let's be civil" tactic. THAT doesn't work.

25. Who said anything about being civil?
It's called being practical. Regardless of how you feel about the flag being burned, a wide variety of Americans look down upon it.

Should we have the right to burn the flag? Of course. But there are still alot of people that would rather not see it happen. Politicians bring this up every new election because it's an issue based upon feeling. And they know it's the issues based on emotion that bring out the people that normally don't come out on election day.

You really want to fight the conservatives on this? Then don't take their bait on making an argument about it. Ignore them and let it go away. After all it will be back the next election, anyway ;)

They've held patriotism hostage long enough and the last thing we need to do is give them more ammo on the subject.

26. It is hard not to take the bait
when the bill will come up in the Senate. How do you ignore voting on the bill?

The bill WILL be voted on and unless we come up with a defensible position it will be passed.

This tactic will ONLY work if the Dems can manuever in the seante to keep it from coming to a vote. Since they insist of being "civil" about these kinds of things, it will come to a vote (see "filibuster compromise")

I agree with you that igoring it would be nice, but now it is in danger of passing and we no longer have that luxury.

19. Why "our enemies?" People who burn flags in the US aren't
our enemies. I want flag burning to be legal because in extreme situations burning a flag symbolizes rage and desperation of US citizens. The NeoCons *think* that US citizens who burn flags are their enemies; are enemies of the US government - and that isn't the case.

Maybe? - "Better a million flags burn than our leaders rape the First Amendment."

22. The flag burning stuff is a poison pill
Avoid it by asking whoever brings it up, why are we talking about this? What about the deficit and what about the 1726+ dead soldiers in Iraq?

24. Yes, but they continue to bring it up
and it will be voted on in the senate next. Ignoring it does not make it go away. It will be voted on and unless we come up with a defense, we will lose AGAIN.

27. the flag burning issue doesn't deserve a reasoned response
the only way to handle this 100% political issue is politically.

There is not a shred of intellectual or emotional honesty in this entire debate, to treat it like a real issue is to fall into a trap.
