Judgment Day looms for US Supreme Court on Ten Commandments cases
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US political, religious and legal establishments are braced for two critical Supreme Court rulings on the Ten Commandments, weighing heavily on the separation of church and state.

The decision, expected as early as Thursday, could inflame conservative evangelical groups or opposing civil liberties lobbies, and thrust the court squarely into partisan politics.

And both sides of the divide will use whatever judgment day brings in the two cases to whip up partisans ahead of a looming battle over what could be imminent vacancies on the court bench.

Each case is born out of the religious and cultural struggle raging in modern America between radical evangelicals and advocates of the secular state.

3. I LOVE that "radical evangelicals" phrase on Yahoo, so glad to
see the Pharisees called what they are. The US version of the Taliban.

6. Does this mean that you and I, BR, may refuse to testify
or even be put under oath?

Sorry, but if I walk into a courtroom for trial, and the Ten is on the wall, I cannot expect a fair trial. That religion wants me fucking DEAD!

No WAY will I consider it a fair trial until the Ten are removed.

10. I really want the Muslims and Wiccans to JOIN this lawsuit
think of the wingnut headspinning on THAT one! "but your honor, we only want OUR religion posted"

Instead of getting framed that we 'libruls' hate religion, we should be encouraging the radical right to show their true colors - and in a way that doesn't get turned against us. We don't hate religion, we support freedom for everyone's religion. Post the Quoran, the Bible, the Book of Morman and EVERY SINGLE other religious text out there in the courthouse.

I want both versions of the Protestant 10 commandments, plus the Catholic version.

I want the radical Clerics Falwell and Dobson on FAUX, red in the face and screaming with rage that they didn't intend THIS to happen, only their pre-approved version of religion is what they've been trying to cram down all our throats.

4. Scalia: "the symbol that government derives its authority from God."
Oh, yeah, tolerant...as long as one follows the neocon way, they are very tolerant.
BTW...the case in TX, it started out as a homeless man filing a lawsuit about the display. Pretty cool story/link about it at the bottom of this post.

From the same article in the original post (using tinyurl cuz the link was too long)

Appearing to endorse the displays, conservative justice Antonin Scalia called them "the symbol that government derives its authority from God."

"I see nothing wrong with the government reflecting that. We're a tolerant society," Scalia said.

Liberal justice Stephen Breyer however countered that, although the US is a highly religious country, "we are also committed to secularism

Mr. Van Orden is homeless, sleeping in a tent in a small wooded area. He has lost his family, his career and his law license, but with scant resources and virtually no help, he managed to raise an argument that has engaged the highest court in the nation.

He sued the state of Texas to remove from the Capitol grounds a 6-foot granite monument carved with the tablets of the Ten Commandments and Jewish and Protestant symbols. He argued that it amounts to state-sanctioned promotion of religion.

That Mr. Van Orden managed to pursue the case so well, Mr. Cruz said, "is a remarkable testament to our system of justice that any individual, regardless of his or her circumstances, can have their day in court, even the Supreme Court of the United States." That said, Mr. Cruz is quick to add, "I think Mr. Van Orden's suit is a large trend across the country that reflects a view of the First Amendment that would read into our Constitution a hostility toward religion."

<snip>

"In the end, I lose," he said. "But I look at it this way: I did this alone. And along the way I attracted Douglas Laycock, Erwin Chemerinsky, the American Jewish Congress, the ACLU and many, many others that joined me. All that from a guy who lives under a bush. "How great is that?"

9. I wish to God that an Islamic judge would get elected
somewhere in this country and put up a large stone copy of the Qu'ran on the front steps on the courthouse with a large engraved marble plaque that proclaimed for all to see "In the Name of Allah, the All-merciful." Anyone got a candidate in mind?
