Has anyone heard of this 'doomsday' bill?
Rep. David Obey (news, bio, voting record) of Wisconsin, called the measure "an invitation to one man-rule and dictatorship" because at least seven weeks could elapse before the House would be reconstituted, leaving major decisions to the president.

Republican Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (news, bio, voting record) of California said the legislation was "a plan that will lead to martial law at exactly the time when we need Congress functioning to represent the interests of the American people."

Handful of Congressmen Could Rule America in Event of Catastrophe

No longer do Capitol Hill legislators need a quorum to do the people’s business. Now under a piece of hotly contested legislation passed without media attention on Jan. 5, only a few members of Congress are needed to do official business in the event of a catastrophe instead of the usual 218.

Supporters claim the bill, passed “under the cover of congressional darkness,” is intended to allow the government to “continue operating” in the event of a catastrophic emergency or terrorist attack. However, constitutional experts say the law is blatantly unconstitutional and ripe for challenge.

6. Why couldn't we just elect 2 reps.
a rep and a replacement for every member of the house? They would run for office as a pair with one being the person to take office, the other one stays in the home state. If there is an attack of some sort and the one in Wash. gets killed, the extra is called to duty immediately.

Says it all..
We are already governed by a secret society; we have no information.
How is this "by the people and for the people"?

People, we are already there.

10. I agree with the idea that a congressman should never be
appointed.

In our country's history every member of the House of Representatives has been elected by the people, and never appointed, and even in a catastrophic situation, this should remain.

I don't know the specifics on this bill, but the GOP probably takes a few steps too far, as usual.

11. Remember about the Northern Command, established for an illegal
military control of the US?

"The Bush administration has called on lawyers in the Justice and Defense Departments to review the Posse Comitatus Act of 1878, which strictly limits the military’s ability to participate in domestic law enforcement. The Posse Comitatus—or “force of the country”—legislation was enacted at the end of the post-Civil War Reconstruction period, when the US military oversaw civil rule in states of the former Confederacy. The law has not been fundamentally amended since, and any changes would require Congressional approval.

General Eberhart told the New York Times: “My view has been that Posse Comitatus will constantly be under review as we mature this command, as we do our exercise, as we interact with FEMA , FBI, and those lead federal agencies out there.... There are some situations where there’s no other alternatives, and federal forces have to be used to secure the safety and security of our people.”

12. Such a bill assumes that everbody will play along.
They shot us down in the streets at Kent State. They can do it again I suppose, we're older, slower and easier to hit. But there comes a time when life's rewards no longer make life worth living. At that point everbody is dangerous. These clowns, and they are the same clowns, had a whole generation at that point and backed off. This time with the media and congress and the public schools they think they have their bases covered. I think that they're learning but they don't quite get it.

Being a Serb, a Palestinian, or a Comanche has less to do with race and geography then it does with attitude and human nature. The sooner this comes to a head (the few controlling the man) the sooner this cycle will be over. Let's Roll.

13. Idea for Congress
From this article:

"It drew little attention and was probably not even discovered by many who voted on it since the rules package centered on recent ethics violations."

Here's an idea for Congress. Pass an ammendment that outlaws the camouflaging of important legislature. I'm sure that there are many examples but this and the RealID law (that was camouflaged by a military spending bill!) are the most egregious.
