Montana governor: We need our Guard & choppers for wildfires! Pentagon: NO

HELENA - Gov. Brian Schweitzer's appearance on Lou Dobbs' show on CNN Thursday was markedly more somber than his appearance two weeks ago.

Schweitzer talked about how bad Montana's wildfire season could be with half of the state's National Guard troops serving in Iraq. Two weeks ago, he laughed with Dobbs about the "stench" of politics emanating from Washington, D.C. After a segment about drought and wildfires in the West, Dobbs questioned Schweitzer about his request to the National Guard to rotate some of Montana's troops home in July and August. Schweitzer said the state will need the Guard's manpower if wildfires blow up. The Guard told Schweitzer no in March.

"We thought it would be a great move to rotate the troops home," Schweitzer said on the national television program. "We asked the National Guard, and they said no."

In addition to half the state's troops, the majority of Montana's Black Hawk helicopters are being used in the war as well, the governor said.
