It's a frightening realization: not only is BSE -- the human equivalent of mad cow disease -- easily transmitted through blood transfusions, it can also strike patients previously thought to be immune to the disease. These findings reveal that a much wider portion of the world population is potentially susceptible to both BSE and mad cow disease, and with incubation times of ten years, it's virtually impossible to say who has BSE right now.

Another disturbing shocker: persons can carry BSE for years without showing any symptoms whatsoever. They may have no idea they're carrying the disease. And their blood can transmit it to others.

1. Regardless, it is still a good time to consider
consuming less meat.

If we continue to destroy our planet, there's going to come a time when all the world, with the exception of the ultra-rich, will be forced to go vegetarian. Unless of course there is a massive die off first, which mad cow might contribute to.

2. I stopped eating anything with hamburger in it when the first case
appears. however, if infected beef is in a restaurant or grocery store, it could contaminate everything else. It is basically indistructable. I think the only thing that kills it is bleach. The hospitals in England spread it around because surgical instruments couldn't be completely cleaned of the stuff. So they started using "one time use" surgical instruments.

The only real way to avoid this is never eat out and grow your own vegetables.

3. Terminology
BSE is not the human equivalent of "mad cow disease" it is "mad cow disease". The human equivalent of BSE is variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease or vCJD.
