Stifling Baghdad despairs as water cut adds to misery
Lubna Ali was resigned to the daily electricity shortages that cut off the lights, shut down the air conditioning and left her family sweltering in the summer heat.

She coped with her terror of the bombs, drive-by shootings and kidnappings by deciding, at the start of this year, to venture no further than her garden gate.

People gather to collect water at an emergency pump
But the final straw for the 42-year-old housewife from the middle-class New Baghdad district in the Iraqi capital came when a rebel attack on a water plant cut off supplies to two million people.

With the temperature above 50C, this brought Mrs Ali "the true knowledge of despair".

1. Riverbend Covers This Regularly
http://riverbendblog.blogspot.com

It's gonna be a REAL long, hot summer in Baghdad and the natives are not going to like it.

From the views I've seen of Iraq, I see cities fully wired and with existing infrastructures. Last night CBS showed a picture of Ramadi with a huge, modern water tower in the middle of town. Most roads have lights and street signs. I saw a lot of this in the webcams prior to the invasion, so this wasn't something that we put in.

The inability of this regime to secure the basics of water and electricity will be one of the reasons for the failure of this invasion. It's hard to win hearts and minds when people can't even take flush toilets.

2. The war is NOT going well. We have proven our incompetence....
The DSM even spells out how badly un prepared Washington was for the aftermath of the battles. We are invaders and occupiers and responsible for providing basic utilities and services for the population and we are failing miserably. I bet they wish for the good old days under Sadam. At least they were assured of water and electricity before we showed up.

3. But, we privatized your oil...and freedom is on the march.

4. That's what the PNAC'ers wanted, but won't tell.
Tons and tons of explosives to blow up civilians and troops for 12 years (or more) lasting 'diversions' so global corporations can steal resources at free will without being harassed by endless 'questions'

5. Mild discomforts can be expected when bringing freedom, liberty, and
democracy to a grateful people, but what a small price to pay.
