Parents Can Pass Divorce To Children, Researcher Says
Parents Can Pass Divorce To Children, Researcher Says

Children of divorced parents often vow not to repeat the same mistakes, but the odds are against them, a University of Utah researcher says.

Nicholas H. Wolfinger calls the greater chances of children of divorce suffering a failed marriage "the divorce cycle."

He found that those whose parents divorced are more likely to marry as teens, cohabitate and marry someone who is also a child of divorced parents.

They are one-third less likely to marry if they are over age 20.

1. Children learn what they live..no surprise
BUT..lots of people who come from broken homes DO learn to pay attention and NOT repeat their parents' mistakes..

Once again.. research can be made to prove anything:)

2. many aspects of psychology are oversold--like the ability to make
predictions. psychology is a human-social science but they like to think of themselves as a hard science.

3. Okay, then, how come
There are so many divorces now, when the parents of all the people getting divorced were married forever?

6. Actually, it's a myth according to what I heard this
morning on NPR. There is a woman who wrote a history book on marriage. I was in my car listening to Stephanie Coontz and she was saying that there were a lot of divorces, but the 50's have been idealized. Marriage is more of a modern invention than one would imagine. Many in the early 1900 century would get married for social or other such reasons and have a lover on the side. In the 30's many divorces or abandonment happened. Marriage came into favor again before WWII, but many of those marriages failed after the soldier came back.

Ozzie and Harriet, Father Knows Best, Leave It To Beaver and such programs projected a myth of what was really going on.

4. I'm not really surprised by this finding
Those findings relate mostly to people whose parents divorced in the 1970s. My husband's family could be Exhibit A in this debate. I tend to blame the grinding poverty that resulted from the divorce and the low amounts paid for child support on my husband's siblings early marriage and subsequent woes. It would be interesting to see whether this trend continues for children born after child support amounts were increased and child support enforcement efforts went into high gear. That happened in most locations around 1988. These kids are now just graduating high school. I would hope not that many would have married just yet.
