Santorum friend to animals!?
WASHINGTON - Puppies and kittens likely are not the first things that come to mind when many think of Sen. Rick Santorum (news, bio, voting record) — the conservative No. 3 Senate Republican known for his tough stance against abortion and gay marriage.

But Santorum, R-Pa., has won high praise from the Humane Society of the United States for pushing legislation aimed at ending breeding facilities known as puppy mills.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals also finds him a friend. "He's a man with a heart, and he doesn't think it's any more acceptable to treat animals cruelly than humans," said Mary Beth Sweetland, director of research and investigations for the Norfolk, Va.-based PETA.

Santorum, chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, said those who think of animal rights as a liberal cause should not be surprised to find him in this camp. A father of six who has a 2-year-old German Shepherd named Schatzie, he said having pets makes for a healthier home.

on these Repulicans to go along witb Partisan agreement? We don't know what they are going thru, but they better begin to understand that the world as it has been in existance will depend on their comming around and overcoming the Bush (AntiChrist) rule.

4. Its the one reason I can't loathe Santorum, he has voted for "pro animal"
legislation in the past. There must be something decent there, way down deep, there is a good person.

8. To bad we can't dig it out
I have to admit I can't loathe him either for that reason. When it comes to matters dealing with animals his record is pretty exemplary. Who knows maybe one day he will see the light and the rest of his record will become the same.

7. Yeah, Santorum's a real prince.
Even sociopaths can have one or two human-like traits.

I mean, look at the BTK guy... he made sure the man with the cracked rib was comfy with a pillow when he tied him up and he gave the mom a glass of water and locked her kids in the bathroom with blankets and toys before he killed her. That makes him a nice guy, too, doesn't it?

:sarcasm:

9. He has how many kids? Six? Eight? They love their pets, probably.
Despite Santorum's ghoulish behavior in displaying the dead baby to his other children, I would guess that he thinks pets are a good idea for introducing responsibility to children.

I'm curious as to whether his kids are major animal-lovers and that's what's affected his position, or if he's always been that way. At least he doesn't take the Coulter position of "God put them here for us to exploit, so let's brutally exploit them."

Puppy mills are a sickening business, run by sick and/or greedy people.

12. I saw that...and as a constituent, sent him a thank you.
Told him I was a liberal Christian Democrat, but was extremely supportive of his actions with this.

Puppy mills are deplorable, run by money-hungry heartless assholes. If you're going to buy from a breeder, anyone with ads in a local paper or posters hung up in a local supermarket (or who won't let you come to their home to see the parents and interview YOU as the buyer) is NOT a reputable breeder.
