If you came home, clicked on the Power-Strip/Surge Suppressor and heard
a odd POP! (one that you had never heard before). Then pushed the Power button on your computer, but absolutely nothing happened (the power didn't come on).

All the other peripherals hooked up to that Power-strip did come on normally, but are still waiting for the Computer for input.

What would you suspect happened? And like I said, only the the actual Computer (everything inside the Case is not working.

6. I was thinking that too, I opened it up and the Fuse is O.K.(I think).
I'm not to good with a Multimeter, what would you set a Multimeter to in order to check a fuse? Or is there another way to check a power supply?

10. Set the multimeter for Resistance,
and place the probes across the fuse. If the resistance reads very high, the fuse is BLOWN. If it reads very low, the fuse is GOOD.

Also, if the breaker "trips", there is a time delay (temperature cooldown) before you can reset it.

5. Check the power srtip
If it's a surge protector, they usualy have a breaker switch on them. It may have triped. Just re-set it. It's usualy a button on the side that you push.

8. That was another thing I thought of, would the button have popped out?
Or gone in? On mine, the button feels like it's pushed too far in (it's got some play, not firm).

12. Yep.
Just push it to re-set. Also, there's usualy a light on the power strip to let you know it's getting juice.

14. The most easily available ones that are reliable are Antec or Enermax
both are good power supplies.

Stay away from the cheap low-end stuff, it'll only cause headaches.

15. I have an old Pentium 3 computer (that I networked) in my Kitchen
I mostly use it to stream RealAudio and as a back-up if something, like this, goes wrong with my newer computer.

Also, I wanted to learn how to create, troubleshoot and maintain a wired LAN, but having a back-up link to the world is nice too.

23. I don't know any good sites.
You might just want to google it and search through the sites untill you find a good one. Also, be careful with the bluetooth, as far as I know, it's not really secure. I'd just use the cradle or direct USB cable to synch it. If you instal a wireless LAN, make sure you restrict the MAC addresses to the ones on your wirles network, that way your neighbors can't pigyback off your internet conection or gain access to your computers.

18. Well, for everyone that said "Fried Power Supply," ding, ding, ding,...
ding! You are correct!

Just installed a new power supply (with 50w more than before) and I'm back in business.

I would have loved everyone else to have been right, it would have saved me almost $80 Dollars.

Oh well, thank you everyone, for your input.

20. ubiquitous Mac snobbery

In 16 years of computing, I have had dozens of power supplies fail on PCs, servers, and other components. I have run rooms full of machines and have heard that sound (and sometimes smelled the smell) many times. I keep a file cabinet drawer full of power supplies stripped from surplus boxes we throw away for later use. And I use them.

During that time, my *personal* machines have all been Apples (something like 25 at last count). And I have never had a power supply failure on an Apple computer of my own, or any lab I've worked in. Motherboard once. Video card once. Damn G4 processor in an iBook itself recently (under warranty, which amused me because the repair cost more than the computer would fetch on eBay). A few drives. But never, ever a power supply.

Go figger.

Now don't get me started bitching, however, about Apple laptop batteries.

22. That may be true, but I can build 2 PC's for what you pay for One Mac
And their's a hell of a lot more software for PC's and If I got a new computer every 8 months or so, I'd never have had a power supply go out either. I've only bought or built 3 Computers in 13 1/2 years because I was able to upgrade them myself, and How many buggy MacOS's, patches, and revisions has Mac had since 1994?

Let's see, OS 7.0,7.1,7.2-7.5,7.6, OS 8.0? :argh: OS9, OSX, OS10.1, OS10.2, OS10.3

Mac's don't impress me or the Mac people who try to brag about them.

30. I've had to replace at least 1 in 4 Mac II/Quadra power units over the yrs
.. and have had many problems with PowerMac supplies from the 6100 thru to the new G5 units (also fan problems on those later ones a plenty). Units started from the keyboard power key were particularly bad with failures. FYI, I've ordered or spec-ed a few thousand Macs since the late 1980's so this isn't a limited sample. I used to buy them in lots of a few hundred at a time. I love Macs, but they have plenty of hardware problems. Soon it won't matter much - Macs are moving to Intel architecture in a few years.

Stick with promoting the OS. You'll have more luck there.

21. Better one... this one has the tech guy scratching his head...
I get a call from editor, we are talking, phone goes dead... he tries to call gets what sounds like fax, in the meantime, my ADT system goes off.

One example of this, but you get the basic idea. I called ADT, they came over, the guy looked at everything then went to look at phone lines. Said did not sound like phone line problem or problem with ADT, must be some sort freakish occurence...um, wtf??? Oh, and all of those times it went off during this scenario, ADT was not notified and shows no occurrences.

So I called phone people, they came, looked at phone line, had no clue.

Anyone? Could it be something wrong with internal wiring, like decay?

Would be nice to know.

24. It sounds like someone is messing with your phone wiring.
I'd call ADT and tell them to rip out all their crap, because your switching to a different alarm company (Like Brinks or something).

Than go cut the wire going into your Phone Company box, so they have to come out and rewire it, because someone has screwed up you wiring.

FBI? Department of Homeland Security? You know they have to keep track of you "Free Press/Free Speech types" at RawStory.

If they are listening, then maybe I should start saying something a bit more sexy when I call my various doctors for appointments.

I cannot cut the line because if I do that, then they will ask me who cut it... what am I going to say?

Just going to have to live with it I suppose.

Some tears might help too.

I'm sure they get that type of story from Dancers and strippers all the time (not that I'm saying you are either, it just a good story).

if there are sections thatare bare and they get damp or wet when it rains you will have an intermittant problem.

36. The inside walls should be dry
I only had a problem when my line got wet. After calling the phone company for about two years regarding my phone going out and having every extension in my house disconnected except the main line which was replaced. I looked at the line going up the side of my house over the garage and around to my bedroom. The phone company claimed they look at my outside line too, but I'm the one who found the problem.

hopefully no boards were damaged and you did not lose any data.

I would also replace your surge protecto/power strip. If its a surge protector that has blown its MOVs, its now a fire hazard.
