***Congratulations CANADA***
Edited on Tue Jun-28-05 09:39 PM by Bluebear

TORONTO - Canada's House of Commons voted Tuesday to legalize gay marriage, passing landmark legislation that would grant all same-sex couples in Canada the same legal rights as those in traditional unions between a man and a woman....

"We are a nation of minorities," Martin said. "And in a nation of minorities, it is important that you don't cherry pick rights."
There are an estimated 34,000 gay and lesbian couples in Canada, according to government statistics. Before the measure passed, gay marriage was legal in seven provinces.

"This is a victory for Canadian values," said Alex Munter, national coordinator of Canadians for Equal Marriage, a group that has led the debate for the legislation....

According to most polls, a majority of Canadians supports the right for gays and lesbians to marry. In the United States, gay marriage is opposed by a majority of Americans, according to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll taken in November, shortly after constitutional amendments in 11 states to ban same-sex marriage were approved.

23. A very typical Canadian response
Edited on Tue Jun-28-05 09:57 PM by noahmijo
short, to the point and as warm as a winter blanket.

I lived in upstate NY about a decade ago. I loved visiting Ontario and seeing Niagara Falls from the Canadien side (let's face it The Horseshoe Falls is the most amazing of the three)

It's funny how here I am in Az (looking to move asap though) and about as far away from Canada as you can get and it's the complete opposite in both weather and people. It's hellish (today it was 110 degrees) and full of assholes.

Oh I'd also like to thank Canada for James Labrie (singer of my fav band Dream Theater and a "canuck" :) ) and Rush

to go back in time - I do not know. Sorry for all the people in the US who are having a hard time being the targets of hatred.

Ya know what, I am going to push big time for Martin as PM cause Steven Harper is also a POS IMHO... He does not believe in Pro Choice, maraige between same sex, etc, etc etc... so I think that we need a minority Government in this Country again IMHO.

45. Minority parliaments have given us our most progressive legislation.
The NDP, though never having formed a federal government, has been able to influence the character of modern Canada to dramatic effect. And Canadians like it like that. It's how Tommy Douglas could be the father of public health-care, and voted the "Greatest Canadian," without ever having been Prime Minister.

Before the last election, a poll found that most voters wanted just this: a Liberal minority, with NDP backing. Hopefully, and realistically, it's what we'll get next time, too, and with increased NDP representation.

36. Canada is so cool from way back
Taking our slaves, they were free there.
Taking our men and they were free from the draft.
Taking our planes on 9-11.
Not having the death penalty.
Making medical care available for all (speed isn't everything)
So many other things and now this too.
What sane humane neighbors we have, eh?
