Critics say Bush speech lacked specifics

UNDATED Democrats and other critics of President Bush's Iraq policy say his prime-time speech to the nation needed more specifics.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid says Bush's Iraq policy is "adrift." The Nevada Democrat also said staying the course "is neither sustainable nor likely to lead to success."

1. My thought precisely within the first few minutes of his speech.

Problem is, he has no good news to provide that doesn't sound pathetic and prove what a horrible waste of human life and resources this disaster has been.

"Adrift" is an excellent word for it. Frankly, I think it is time to tell the Iraqi leadership "We'll be out by ##/##/05; have your soldiers and police trained or you're up a shit creek without a paddle."

By my count (speech started at 8:00 pm)

9/11 Reference #1 at 8:02 p.m.
9/11 Reference #2 at 8:04 p.m.
9/11 Reference #3 at 8:09 p.m.
9/11 Reference #4 at 8:24 p.m.

Suprisingly, Bush referred to Osama Bin Laden by name...

Osama Reference #1 at 8:07 p.m.
Osama Reference #2 at 8:09 p.m.

1st spontaneous applause did not occur until 8:25 p.m.
