Anyone read Tom Friedman's article about Ireland?
registration required.

Anyway I'm 36. My folks were from Ireland. When I was a kid we used to send clothes back to the relatives. My father's family got indoor plumbing in the early 70s.

It is weird how Ireland is one of the wealthiest people in Europe now. There are fewer and fewer turkeys in the Irish bars now, because they all go back. I used to have a lot of illegal relatives but they stay in Ireland now.

No deep thoughts, just observations.

1. Read it.
A lot of my Irish friends are moving back if they haven't already. Even my ex who said he'd never go back is now considering it because the jobs here in TX are few and far between. Our friends over there have great jobs with Dell and Apple. However, the cost living has skyrocketed and it's only a matter of time before the housing market goes bust.

7. There may be a reverse "brain drain".
With Bush's attitude to stem cell reseach. The Religious Right's hostilty to science. With our educational system teaching "intelligent design" as "evolution". And the abandonment of the Super-Collider here while that the facility on the Swiss-French border is about to go on line. Our scientists will have no choice but go abroad. We will pay a very heavy price for eight years of George Bush.

2. My understanding is that a lot was invested
in education. Lotsa Yank jobs went to the old country in the 90's.

6. I heard they used to be worse.
I have not been back in many, many years so I can't testify.

9. Ireland has what is considered in Europe
to be a wonderful education system.

8. I've been trying to get my dual citizenship
with Ireland. I just got back from there a few weeks ago, and the place is booming. It seems that everyone has a "mobile" and a new (tiny-yet-cute) car.
