Proof That lack of Applause at last night Speech was not planned
The conservatives are claiming that the lack of applause at Bush's speech last night was planned or that the troops were order not to applause. That is a lie. Bush and company allocated 40 minutes for the speech last night but due to the lack of interruptions for applause, the speech only ran 28 minutes. http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=4724156
____________

Still, the White House had allotted 40 minutes for the remarks. Without the applause that may have been anticipated, Mr. Bush wrapped up in just 28 minutes.

1. I heard on NBC Nightly News....
that the first applause was initiated by one of craphead's staffers. The soldiers could not applaud when he entered the room because they were standing at attention...and not allowed to move.

3. I wonder if the WH had to send down applause orders

I wish some of those guys heckled him on live TV---unfortunately, they could face a courts martial on orders of the C-in-C if they did that

2. That is hilarious
That is even better than when the soldiers heckled Rumsfeld.

Bush must have felt like a real ass waiting for everyone to cheer for him. I wonder if these guys had been in a nasty part of Iraq and are no longer in the mood to cheer for someone who got their buddies killed

33. I'm sure they were hoping for good news.
The fact they went out of his way to have this at a military base I'm sure possibly set them up to think he was going to give them a timetable. "Six months and we're out!!" would have gotten him his Hooah!'s.

Instead, our President told them that they were being killed and it was "worth it."

I thought it was supposed to be an hour too but then it got cut thirty min's early. Very interesting. I also heard that they were told not to clap and figured they put an extra thirty min's on just in case Bush wanted to say "freedom is on the march" a dozen more times.

10. 40 minutes minus 28 minutes = 12 minutes of applause they expected?
They are truly out of their collective minds. They expected 30 percent of the allotted time to be applause?

OMG, they are delusional.

12 fucking minutes of non-clapping throughout the speech that was supposed to happen. Classic.

37. not all clapped
one shot of the "spontaneous applause" on CNN showed a couple of rows NOT clapping, the camera quickly cut to another row of our troops clapping

same thing happened at the end of the speech

clapping or not - the applause was extremely subdued, polite clapping like you would hear at the end of a poor performance and you are only clapping to be polite

36. I actually listened on NPR...
and I noticed the silence. I thought perhaps there was no microphone where it could pick up stuff. Like 12 minutes went by with no response. Then there was that applause cue and it certainly sounded coerced. There was a small group that sounded truly enthused, but it certainly wasn't spontaneous applause and it was utilitarian...steady perfunctory applause that would have greeted something like, "And let's thank wonderbread for providing the toast! Give them a hand!" It drizzled out quickly, with one tiny rev when the people who started it tried to keep it going. It didn't keep going.

27. Did anyone hear the speech on the radio?
I caught the tail end and thought he KILLED! ABC local affiliate must have turned the volume of the applause way up (or dubbed it in)because it was really loud and the reporter said "THUNDEROUS applause-an OVERWHELMINGLY ENTHUSIASTIC response from the troops for their commander-in chief" I was completely bummed and felt hopeless that all of these people would react that way. Then I read DU today and it's a whole different story. Thanks DUers!!

32. No, I don't have a tape..
It's the station that carries Sean Hannity's show and when I listen to Randi Rhodes I change over to it during commercial breaks just for laughs. Apparantly they had cut away from Sean to cover the speech and it was some reporter (I don't know who)I'm going to check and see if I can email them or something-really it was so freaky to find out what it was actually like after hearing that!

41. It was also the Special Forces from Fort Bragg
who had Osama surrounded in Tora Bora when the brass showed up and took over the operation. Then the helicopters came and took Osama away.

It was also Fort Bragg that had a number of 'suicides' from the same force a short time later.

The folks at this base have been through a lot, yet Bu$h barely recognizes their sacrifices. No wonder they're not jumping for joy when they see him.

39. Idea of Republican media outlets.
They should have responded that the reason that the speech was so short instead of filling the allotted time frame was because they figured there would be a lot of demostrations and protestors. Since there were none of them during the speech, everyone must have loved the speech.

42. The NYT is discussing the silience
The NYT is discussing the silence. http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06/30/politics/30speech.html?

After two presidential campaigns, Mr. Bush has finely tuned his sense of timing for cueing applause, especially when it comes to his most oft-expressed declarations of resolve to face down terrorists. But when the crowd did not respond on Tuesday , he seemed to speed up his delivery a bit. Then, toward the end of the 28-minute speech, there was an outbreak of clapping when Mr. Bush said, "We will stay in the fight until the fight is done."
