Bowles is running for Senate
Former White House staffer sought Senate seat in '02 By ROB CHRISTENSEN, Staff Writer
Former White House Chief of Staff Erskine Bowles told supporters Wednesday that he will be a candidate next year for the U.S. Senate seat held by John Edwards.
In an e-mail letter to 6,000 backers, Bowles said his broad background in business and government would help him stabilize North Carolina's wobbling economy.
"I want to do all I can to create an environment that gets our economy going and makes the people of North Carolina feel secure again," Bowles wrote. "I want to provide leadership in the U.S. Senate that makes good common sense, that really helps people and that puts North Carolina values ahead of knee-jerk partisanship."
Bowles is expected to formally announce his candidacy today in a series of interviews with reporters. Bowles had been expected to get into the Senate race ever since Edwards announced on Sept. 7 that he would devote his energies to his quest for the White House rather than seek re-election.
