Brit Hume Goes On TV & Says He Wants to Profit Off the Terrorist Attack

Media Matters points out that Fox News' top anchorman, Brit Hume, gave us a glimpse into just how cynical, greedy and disgusting the right-wing's outlook on the world is:

"My first thought when I heard - just on a personal basis, when I heard there had been this attack and I saw the futures this morning, which were really in the tank, I thought, 'Hmmm, time to buy.'"
- Fox News's Brit Hume, 7/7/05

That's right - his first thought after hearing about the awful terrorist attack in London today wasn't "how tragic," or "let's say a prayer for the dead," or "how can I help the victims" - his first thought was, there was a terrorist attack, how can I personally profit off it? In fact, his impulse to use the bloodshed to make himself money was so intense, he actually voiced it on national television (FYI - in case you'd like to voice your displeasure, Brit's email address is brit.hume@foxnews.com and his office number is 202-824-6300).

Of course, this was only the worst example from Fox. Earlier in the day, Fox reporter Brian Kilmeade seemed to cheer on the attack because he said "it works to our advantage." Meanwhile, Fox's Stuart Varney was genuinely excited that the attack will mean other progressive issues will now be knocked out of the public debate. "It takes global warming off the front burner," Varney frothed. "It takes African aid off the front burner. It sticks terrorism and the fight on the war on terror, right up front all over again."

Remember, these people are using the public's airwaves to spew out this bile. To call these people nauseating is an insult to nausea.

Isn't this the one that bush thought had a pretty face, too? Remember their little "footsies" episode on air? Now we know why bush is attracted to him. Ingrate minds think alike.

97. September 23, 2003, "exclusive interview"
I don't have the pic, but someone posted it on DU at the time, where Hume and Little Boots were sitting so close together, it looked like their shoes were touching. "Playing footsies" is exactly what it looked like.

Someone might have the photo, I can't find it. Hume would get down on all fours and lick bush's feet, I'm sure.

You must be so proud to be one of the "have mores". Your shocking public disregard for the innocent victims of the London bombings brings to mind Bush's famous quote from F911. Your obvious partisan bias has been noticed Brit. I am so looking forward to an American Truth and Reconciliation Commission. I can tell you this, those who tell the truth before the collapse of the fascist Bu$h empire will be forgiven their earlier trespasses. Guantanamo is not the pleasant reward for treason you had in mind...is it?

20. While an actual human being would have thought about the victims
Brit Hume thought about how he could turn a buck off the tragedy, and bragged on the air that that was his first thought. Words just can't quite capture the callousness, the cynicism, the outright inhumanity of a so-called man whose thoughts would run that way.

If there is a shred of professionalism at Fox, Brit Hume will be given his walking papers first thing tomorrow.

Let bush or cheney fuck him...but I like to save my fucking for those I really, really like. We use sexual terms in such an odd way, I never want to fuck them or let them kiss my ass or any such things.

I know Fox is full of such people and worry a little less how their broadcasters talk about it then how this administration might use it. And please don't let them "prove" in their lying way that Iran sponsored it. As long as they keep saying el Qaeda hoping that won't happen.

109. They're all doing it.....
not overtly perhaps, but they're all tying it in together and proclaiming that this is no time for a "scheduled withdrawal", that we need, guess what, MORE RESOLVE in fighting the war on terror!
What a coincidence that this happened in conjunction with bush's "more resolve, stay the course" speech last week. People were just starting to see through the fog of bush's monumental war fuck-up and now, voila! Another attack to cement his "resolve" and get everyone back into the "all war all the time" mode.
We're getting 24/7 coverage with the same assholes who were wrong about the invasion of Iraq again.
The question that EVERYONE should be asking is, 'who stands to benefit the most from these attacks on London'? The answer isn't that hard to come up with. It's bush and the neo-cons.

70. Here's the e-mail I sent...
Dear Mr. Hume,

The following quote was brought to my attention. Please tell me you were misquoted or it was taken out of context.

"My first thought when I heard - just on a personal basis, when I heard there had been this attack and I saw the futures this morning, which were really in the tank, I thought, 'Hmmm, time to buy.'"
- Fox News's Brit Hume, 7/7/05

This is the most blatant example of personal greed and lack of empathy I have run across recently. If the quote is true, I feel pity for your network and viewers. They deserve better. If the quote is true, I feel contempt for you, sir. While they may be your personal feelings, voicing them publicly was downright idiotic.

People died today, and your first thought was "Hmmm, time to buy"? What was your first thought on 9/11, "hmmm, maybe I should invest in Kleenex because all of the fatherless children will be crying for years?" Edited on Fri Jul-08-05 09:08 AM by alarcoeg
Mr. Hume,

I condemn in the strongest terms possible the following thoughtless comments you made on air yesterday in regard to the tragic bombings in London.

...the market was down. It was down yesterday, and you know, you may have had some bargain-hunting going on. I mean, my first thought when I heard -- just on a personal basis, when I heard there had been this attack and I saw the futures this morning, which were really in the tank, I thought, "Hmmm, time to buy." Others may have thought that as well...

MY first thought when I heard of the attacks was sympathy for the victims and the British people, and anger at the perpetrators and a desire to find and punish them. I had no thoughts of politicizing the events and certainly no thoughts of making money off of them.

How people like you become Washington managing editors at a news network is beyond me.

92. ROFLMFAO !!! - Bwahahahahahahahah !!! - CHECK THIS OUT !!!
Prediction from a 1995 interview (with Hume):

<snip>

"The Internet is an interesting phenomenon. My sense of it is that in ten years, or fifteen perhaps, we'll all be saying, 'Hey, you remember the Internet?' And we'll all laugh about it. It reminds me of the bulletin board world that existed ten years ago. There was tremendous enthusiasm and excitement among computer buffs about all the things that were possible in that domain. And of course in those days we were talking about the early days of CompuServe and some of the same information services, and there was some of the same enthusiasm expressed there about educational opportunity and e-mail and all the things you could do. It seems to me distinctly possible that a number of people, particularly in the academic world, are getting important work done with help from the Internet, but it is not at all clear to me that it is a very widespread situation."

Good to know we have a journalist of the caliber of Brit Hume at the helm of America's most watched corporate media. What foresight the man has!!!

:rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl:

BTW - Anybody know what the deal was with his son's suicide? I don't remember Hume being such a total prick until the last several years. Was it that that pushed him to the dark side, or is it the fact that Faux News would expect nothing less?

133. I read a few weeks ago that Brit Hume's son was "Suicided" by the Bush Mob
I don't remember the site but they talked about some of the people who have been suicided or Wellstoned.

Brit Hume's son, the site wrote, continued investigating a story that was detrimental to the Bush Crime Family and was killed in another suspicious suicide.

Cookie Roberts was criticized for betraying her father's attempted legacy. There was a strange small plane crash, I think in Alaska after her father stated he regretted his part in the Warren Commission Cover up, he was a Congressman and the Coast Guard refused to look for him even when some citizens in rural areas reported the crashed plane wreckage and Cokie, I believe, did nothing and turned very right wing.

I rarely watch TV but remember in one of the Presidential debates, Cokie said that Bush was surrounded by his family and well-wishers and Kerry was kinda off there on his own. A few seconds before I had seen Kerry surrounded by his family and well-wishers. It makes you wonder about the Greenbaum speech given by Dr. Hammond in front of the American Psychiatric Society that he began and ended with a statement that he hoped the CIA didn't kill him but he could no longer keep silent on the number of patients who had been tortured (in remarkably similar ways to the Arabs at Guantanamo Bay) in the MK-ULTRA Monarch program as children and the other psychiatrists across the USA and in Canada who reported adult patients talking about their brainwashing and Dr. Green and Dr. White which a number of CIA Nazi human experimentation psychiatrists may have used.

Dr. Hammond believed that this brainwashing had happened to tens of thousands of Americans and we were going into the third generation of this sexual abuse of children by the CIA - See The Finders and The McMartin School. That would explain some of the right-wing support for these atrocities along with what Aldous Huxley and others have warned about in subliminal messages in film and TV in his Brave New World REVISITED which was an essay comparing his view of the future decades earlier in Brave New World and Orwell's 1984 stating he thought it would be a combination of the two with A BOOT STAMPING ON A HUMAN FACE FOREVER and the population zoned out on Soma (anti-depressants) and TV.

99. What D.H. Lawrence said about the Brit Humes of the world...
How Beastly The Bourgeois Is
D.H. Lawrence

How beastly the bourgeois is
especially the male of the species--

Presentable, eminently presentable--
shall I make you a present of him?

Isn't he handsome? Isn't he healthy? Isn't he a fine specimen?
Doesn't he look the fresh clean Englishman, outside?
Isn't it God's own image? tramping his thirty miles a day
after partridges, or a little rubber ball?
wouldn't you like to be like that, well off, and quite the
thing

Oh, but wait!
Let him meet a new emotion, let him be faced with another
man's need,
let him come home to a bit of moral difficulty, let life
face him with a new demand on his understanding
and then watch him go soggy, like a wet meringue.
Watch him turn into a mess, either a fool or a bully.
Just watch the display of him, confronted with a new
demand on his intelligence,
a new life-demand.

How beastly the bourgeois is
especially the male of the species--

Nicely groomed, like a mushroom
standing there so sleek and erect and eyeable--
and like a fungus, living on the remains of a bygone life
sucking his life out of the dead leaves of greater life
than his own.

And even so, he's stale, he's been there too long.
Touch him, and you'll find he's all gone inside
just like an old mushroom, all wormy inside, and hollow
under a smooth skin and an upright appearance.

Full of seething, wormy, hollow feelings
rather nasty--
How beastly the bourgeois is!

Standing in their thousands, these appearances, in damp
England
what a pity they can't all be kicked over
like sickening toadstools, and left to melt back, swiftly
into the soil of England.

This quote can be used to our advantage. What could be better than to point out the real feelings of the party than to use a quote from one of their "star" anchors?

I heard a clip of the above statement today, and I literally could not believe my ears. After watching the video of this and other clips, and clearly seeing that you did indeed say the above - and meant it - I am compelled to express my disgust with your behavior. Your dearth of integrity, character and morals is only surpassed by your lack of professionalism. Your blatant avarice in the face of human tragedy crosses over the line in a manner I have never before seen. I grew up watching Walter Cronkite, Eric Severied, Chet Huntley and David Brinkley. One of my earliest memories is of Walter Cronkite announcing the assassination of President Kennedy. I would expect to see aliens landing on my front lawn before seeing one of those fine journalists expressing such insensitive and inappropriate views while covering a news event. The journalistic standards of the major television outlets have deteriorated since that time, and I have long known that journalistic standards at Fox News were far more lax than the other major television news outlets. Your remarks were the worst of a number of tasteless, vulgar remarks throughout a day of coverage that brought complete disgrace everyone in the Fox News organization. It is quite a feat to have become, in one short day, the epitome of slime on a network that has never been interested in pulling itself out of the primordial ooze. I'm sure your mother would be proud.
I must also thank you, however, because you've given me a new project. I'll be attending some end-of-summer barbeque's in the next couple of months, and you and your colleagues comments will make for some entertaining conversation. I'll put them on flyers, along with the web addresses where anyone can view the transcripts and video clips. I've been collecting some news items to copy for the same purpose, so one more page won't be any trouble at all. Yes, you can take pride in the fact that your statements will be included among a number of other infamous examples of the greed, hypocrisy and lies of the President, the Republican party, and the right wing supporters who dictate their agenda. By the time they're passed on by the friends and acquaintances I give them to, they could well be seen by a few hundred people.
So to you and everyone at Fox News, please feel free to continue making complete unfeeling asses of yourselves. Every time you fail to hide your arrogance and greed, it becomes easier to enlighten those people who are repelled by such unprincipled values.
