London blasts death toll 52 - Australia PM Howard

CANBERRA, July 8 (Reuters) - The death toll from the bomb blasts that tore through packed London underground trains and a bus stands at 52, Australian Prime Minister John Howard said on Friday.

"The latest advice that I have is that the death toll is at 52, some hundreds injured. In the nature of things, sadly the death toll is likely to climb," Howard told a news conference in the Australian capital Canberra.

British authorities have so far confirmed that four blasts on Thursday morning killed at least 37 people and wounded about 700 others in the British capital's deadliest peacetime attack.

French Interior Minister Nicolas Sarkozy has quoted the British government as saying 50 people were killed.
