Robin Cook on the Downing Street Minutes

I've lost track of how often I've seeen it said on DU, that the Downing Street Minutes were pivotal in the UK elections or how well the British media is handling the issue. I've stated from time to time that this is nonsense and that the American media is treating them with more of the attention they deserve than the British media. These comments are usually met with silence and the vilification of the American media continues, so I can only assume that people think I'm wrong.

After reading this Guardian article from July 1st, I was pleased to learn that Robin Cook shares my assessment. From the article:

"In (an interview with Associated Press), Tony Blair professes himself "astonished" at the debate in America over the leaked Downing Street memorandum of July 2002, which revealed that the president had "made up his mind to take military action" long before he told the public. But what should really astonish the rest of us is that there is no such debate going on in Britain. The memorandum that is causing such a stir in America is, after all, a minute of our government, and our nation is entitled to some answers."

This is very relevent. The terrorist attacks in London are most probably a response to British military action in Iraq so the Downing Street Minutes and the revelations contained within should be at the forefront of everyone's minds. Please consider reminding your friends, associates and Members of Parliament or other Representatives of this issue.

I think it's both to be fair. But I agree with your sentiment, the issue of "fixing around the policy" is by far the graver of the two crimes.

so is this about the deception and the distortion. The crime is still unfolding.
