My email to the British Consulate
I followed a link in another thread and sent an email of support to the British Consulate here in NYC. I'm not good at this sort of thing, and am not nearly as eloquent as a lot of folks here on DU, but after what happened I had to do something, even if it was as small as an email. IThis is what I wrote.

To Whom it May Concern,

I am writing to express my deepest condolences to the British people for the tragedy in London yesterday. I am a native, lifelong New Yorker so the events of yesterday have a special resonance with me, having lived through the attacks of September 11.

My heart was wrenched to see those poor people in London, who were just going to work to support their families. Seeing their ash-covered faces, shaken and dazed, I could not help but be reminded of September 11. My sister worked in midtown Manhattan, but her job often took her to the Financial District, and I was unable to contact her for most of that day. I will never forget how afraid I was that I would never see her again. Luckily, she made it home safely, but that fear is something that lives with me. So many sisters and brothers, wives and husbands, friends and lovers never came home that day. When I saw the images of burning death in London, I wondered how many people were waiting anxiously at home for some word of their loved ones. I wondered how many would never see them again. My heart is heavy for them; no one should know that kind of pain.

There is something else I will never forget about then: the tremendous outpouring of love and support that was given to New Yorkers by the British people. In our darkest hour, you were there for us, members of the same human family. You wiped away our tears, and gave a shoulder to lean on when we needed it the most.

I would just like to let you know that here in New York we are thinking about you, praying for you, and keeping you close to our hearts.

Sincerely,
Jessica White
Brooklyn, NY

I encourage everyone to send letters and emails of support. Trust me, they really need it right now, more than bickering over politics.
