Why do you hate Britain?
Those words are ready on my lips.

We learned our lessons from the American right wing after 11 September 2001. Now, whenever anyone criticises our country or government, we can shut down all debate and discussion, claim the moral high ground, and crack the whip.

Just because we have been the victims of violence in a violent world.

Why do you hate Britain, prowarriors?

Why do you hate Britain, pro-torturers?

Why do you hate Britain, Guantanamites?

Congratulations, Right-Wing America. Your four years of sympathy are over.

Why do you hate Britain?

1. They're jealous of our freedoms

1. They're jealous of our reasonably tolerance police force and that many policeman turn a blind eye to cannabis use and the use of generally safe street drugs as they can all tell the that War on Drugs is STUPID and trust the general public to make up their own minds about what to do with their own bodies. They do not have this fredom.

2. They're jealous of the fact that Christianity in this country is a religion which anyone may or may not choose to practice and is entirely a matter for them. Nobody attacks them particularly and they attack nobody in particular, it is rightly regarded as a personal choice, a matter for personal reflection and they are free to worship whatever diety they choose. They are also free to discuss it without everybody leaping in on all sides and yammering. That is in fact an unlegislatable-for and REAL freedom, which they do not have, and it's their own fault for being strident and shrill.

3. They're jealous of the fact that we are free to be ILL, that even though the system doesn't work perfectly we can all rely on each other in this country to give anough manoy to the State to look after each other if we aren't able to do it ourselves. We are free to contract diseases, have accidents, be dealt bad luck in our physical health without it destroying us financially.

4. They're jealous of our freedom to laugh at ourselves and to be weak sometimes, to be cuddly and a bit ridiculous, and our freedom to choose when we will be firm and when we will be soft. They have no such choice.

5. They're jealous of our freedom to drink alcohol at 16.

6. They're jealous of our freedom to walk about our streets without fear of being shot at.

7. They're jealous of our freedom to be homosexuals and even be widely celebrated for this, they do not have this freedom, if they are gay and on the right, they are trapped and can only foam and fume and pretend that they're not. These chains are amongst the strongest that bind them.

They are slaves. They hate us because we are free and they are slaves.

2. Please tell me that you are only pretending to be bigoted
It is for none of the reasons you state.

Palestine, Afghanistan and Iraq are occupied and their peoples bombed, tortured, "disappeared"; and the UK is helping or turning a "blind eye". Until the UK withdraws its troops from Iraq, the UK will be the target of terrorists.

The bombs that went off in London on Thurday comprised in total 40lb explosives. Compare that with the thousands upon thousands of *tons* of explosives dropped on Iraq; or with the bulldozers flattening homes in Palestine, sometimes with their occupants still inside them; or with wedding guests massacred by trigger-happy US bombers in Afghanistan.

The British people are, by and large, cleverer and more clear-sighted than their leaders. The bombs in London on 7/7 were nothing to do with wanting to disrupt our way of life or envying our freedoms: they were to make the UK stop helping the US and Israel oppress Muslim people all over the Middle East.

I hate to burst your bubble, but the UK will still be a target for terrorists even if they do these things you mention. At that point, terrorism will simply fall under the aegis of "defending ourselves from Western cultural interference."

I'm sorry, I didn't realise that the UK was bulldozing Palestinian homes. Many people here have deplored the violence in Palestine, Afghanistan, and Iraq. May we not also deplore the violence in London?

I'm not going to start an I/P debate here because it's pointless and has been discussed ad nauseum. I'm glad that you find the targeting of innocent civilians to be an apropriate response to the UK's notably reasonable and benign occupation of Basra. By all means, though, let the sloganeering commence...

3. I'm sorry, I am confused by this post
Are you saying that Republican operatives MIHOP Thursday morning? That agents of the RNC were setting off those bombs? To what end?

Please give a better explination of the connection.

6. After 911, RW Americans were happy to use "Why do you hate America?" as
an excuse for EVERYTHING. Any time we raised a criticism, it was just "Why do you hate America?". So now the terrorists have attacked my country, and I say to the RWers - why do you hate Britain?

8. It's easy -
they hate us for our kulcha, because they have none of their own. Perhaps they want us to bring them Freedom and Democracy (although the latter might just be too difficult for them to understand).
