Downed US Seals may have got too close to Bin Laden
Yet whatever the final death toll from the worst incident in the history of the Seals — the Sea Air Land Commandos — there were tantalising hints that the original mission had been far from routine.

According to former special forces officers and other military sources, the four-man Seal strike team may have come too close to one of the US-led coalition’s highest-priority targets — perhaps Mullah Muhammad Omar, the former Taliban leader, or even Osama Bin Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda. Other military sources suggested the target was a regional Taliban commander suspected of links with Al-Qaeda.

Do you suppose Bush is thinking about OBL now?

1. And now they're dead. All of them.

If they got close, I'd say Emmanual Goldstein has got his shit together.

2. All?
One was rescued. Did he die and I missed it?

5. My mistake. I stand corrected.
When I heard of the rescue story, I probably I thought Jessica Lynch, and blocked it out.

Not too cynical, huh?

9. Afghans usually leave one survivor
to go tell their hellish experience to the rest of the world. Kipling's "The Man Who Would Be King" is a terrific adventure story highlighting that tradition. Worth watching.

10. There was a story out that the last one was beheaded
and the body left where it could be recovered, but I never heard a confirmation of it.

Yes, one was rescued.

3. Sending 4 guys, even SEALS, is not enough
SEALS are some bad motherfuckers, but you can bet that wherever OBL is is heavily fortified and defended.

Just imagine if the servicemembers in Afghanistan had the logistical support available before the illegal invasion of Iraq pulled all those people and equipment away from them?

4. Capturing or killing Bin Laden will accomplish little if anything in the
grand scheme of things.

6. Right, but Bush would exploit the hell out of it
To raise his poll numbers.

7. I disagree. UBL wants to nuke us.
UBL and Mullah Omar are seeking a nuclear bomb to use against the US.

8. Yeah, but the fact is, people who have been seeking a nuclear bomb
to use against the U.S. was going on well before bin Laden came along. Think Qaddafi, for one.

13. Yes, and Qaddafi would have gotten one if the West didnt't
negotiate.

That isn't an argument for not worrying about who gets a nuclear bomb.
