4. New Orleans is very violent.
You have to watch where you go around there. It is easy to end up in a very scary neighborhod with one wrong turn. That it is number one comes as no surpise to anyone who has lived there.

Wasn't there a HUGE problem with the police there...
... as well? I seem to remember massive corruption and criminal activity among the ranks of the police which (obviously) added to the problems.

Or perhaps I am completely wrong (in that case I apologize to the police dept.)

6. No, you are correct.
There was a giant sting operation in the past few years where a bunch of cops wentto prison. A buddy of mine was the undercover informant that broke the case open. He no longer lives in Louisiana.

12. Oh he'll be fine.
He is an undercover FBI agent. Those guys move from one bust to the next like it is nothing. This guy was crazy in college. Just a thrill seeker who found a way to get paid doing it.

2. I'm surprised that San Diego is ranked 16.
I thought it would be lower than that.

3. New Orleans is NOT Cajun!
It's a very diverse place. Cajuns are a small minority there.

5. It's been a long time since I lived in Louisiana
but it seems like the Lafayette area would be where you'd find a fair amount of Cajuns. You're right about New Orleans though. I know - I was born in Houston but lived in New Orleans during my school years.

7. Yeahyouright!
As the Cajuns would say! I spent four years in Laf'yette, the capital of Acadiana. New Orleans is a completely different bowl of jambalaya! Now I'm back in San Antonio, which I'm glad to see isn't on this list.

10. The link says that is based on an unusual adjustment, not
per capita.

HA! Just kidding. I love Detroit. But San Francisco and Phoenix? No way I'm going to those killing fields.

18. Strange methodology they use
I still think it's more useful to look at the per capita murder rate (how many murders per 100, 000 or something like that).

This gives a slightly misleading account.

19. Both analytic approaches are presented.
The rankings posted here are after adjustment for the usual socio-economic factors that are associated with homicide rates, which I find instructive, but if you are just looking to avoid getting shot the the raw rates are there also. The top two are the same in both cases.
