Of Unborn U.S. babies are soaking in a stew of chemicals

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Correspondent Thu Jul 14,11:28 AM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Unborn U.S. babies are soaking in a stew of chemicals, including mercury, gasoline byproducts and pesticides, according to a report released on Thursday.

Cord blood reflects what the mother passes to the baby through the placenta.

"Of the 287 chemicals we detected in umbilical-cord blood, we know that 180 cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests," the report said.

Lets go one step further we are all made up of carbon atoms. Can we no longer burn coal use carbon paper or wear diamonds?

3. I wonder if the writer is anti-abortion?
The use of "Unborn babies" instead of "fetuses" always makes me wonder.

8. sounds like it
It's not a damned baby until it is born.

This is a slippery attempt to redefine the term.

9. I don't think that's the purpose of the study- besides, things like this
point up the bald-faced hypocrisy of so-called "pro-life" conservatism.

If the Bush people really gave a damn about "life" and babies, they wouldn't be working overtime to do things like loosen EPA restrictions on mercury emissions.

I find this stuff frightening, but not terribly surprising.

5. I wonder what's in my childrens blood right now.
Should send a couple of vials to a Lab and find out.

"They found an average of 287 contaminants in the blood, including mercury, fire retardants, pesticides and the Teflon chemical PFOA."

7. The headline is misleading
A few parts per million/billion of a dangerous chemical is bad but "soaking" is a huge overstatement.

10. How about "Mother's blood laced with deadly chemicals" ?
Oh, that's right, not heart-rending enough. And who cares about adults, anyway, when fetuses make such better copy...
