Levi Strauss (jeans) closes ALL U.S. plants

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/09/25/national/main575172.shtml

Levi Strauss & Co. will close its last manufacturing plants in the United States and Canada, eliminating nearly 2,000 jobs, the struggling jeans maker said Thursday.

The company will close two sewing and finishing plants in San Antonio by year's end and lay off 800 workers. It will also shutter its three remaining plants north of the border that employ 1,180 people. The company will contract with foreign plants to make up for the closings.

The move will allow the company to focus more on product design, marketing and sales of its jeans, said Julie Klee, general manager of Levi Strauss & Co. in Canada.

Levi Strauss is one of several clothing companies nationwide that has been shutting down U.S. plants and moving production to other countries with cheaper labor in recent years.

4. An American icon and in Shrub's home state
Ya think he's gonna make a appearance to wish the unemployed workers well or mark the end of American Levis?

The Dems need to jump on this.

10. Slight correction Texas is not shrub's home state
Yankee George Walker Bush, son of former President George Bush and first lady Barbara Bush, is the 43rd president of the United States. He was born in New Haven, Conn., on July 6, 1946 and grew up in Midland, Tex. He received degrees from Yale and Harvard Universities and during the Vietnam War era Bush served as a pilot in the Texas Air National Guard. He married Laura Welch in 1977. They have two daughters, Jenna and Barbara.

5. This is so sad
Levi has been a great American company.

Back during the era of segregation they demanded that Southern communities allow them to open integrated plants. Otherwise they would not build factories in their towns.

They have been in the forefront of gay rights issues and in giving back to the San Francisco/Oakland community.

I really hate to read this.

9. They held on longer than most
Their competitors moved out years ago.

I think this is the biggest problem in America today. Our standard of living is at stake.

6. Tragic, and telling, news, under the Bush Economy.
:-(

So, pray tell Shrubbie, where are these manufacturing workers going to find jobs now? Must they relocate to China?

I sure am glad that those tax cuts have led to job creation... :-(

7. This would make an excellent issue/photo op
for any candidate who wants to use it.

Like someone else here said, Levi's are an American institution. This is like the end of baseball or apple pie.

8. Traitors - they should have their charter revoked
What right does Levi Strauss have to operate a business under the laws and protection of the US? Their charter should be revoked immediately.
