Community Proposes Banning Sex Offenders From Beaches

DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. -- A community in Central Florida is proposing a law that would ban sex offenders from the beach, according to Local 6 News.

Daytona Beach Shores Mayor Greg Northrup's proposed ordinance would ban sex offenders from buying or renting property within 2,500 feet of the coastline. It would essentially ban sex offenders from living any where on the beach side of the community.

Northrup said the move is necessary following a series of sexual assaults and murders in Central Florida.

Northrup said pedophiles are coming to the beach for sex, Local 6 News reporter Tarik Minor said.

"It makes it more convenient for them if they live across the street to be able to devise a way of coming down here and doing what they want to do with children," Northrup said.

1. I'm curious ...

This is supposedly necessary. Okay. I'm wondering if any of those sexual assaults or murders were committed by people who had rented or purchased property within 2,500 feet of a beach. Should the answer to this question be "yes," then I also wonder whether enough sexual assaults and murders (I'm assuming, probably incorrectly, they mean murders related to a sex crime) are committed by people who rent or own property within 2,500 feet of a beach for it to make any difference at all in the incidence of these crimes.

As a somewhat related observation, I seem to be seeing a lot of laws or proposed laws lately that put the burden of a police power on businesses and/or private individuals working for those businesses. I wonder why this is the case.
