17. Scotty was a true hero
Storming the beaches on D-Day
At 19, James escaped the turmoil at home by joining the Canadian army, becoming a lieutenant in artillery. He was among the Canadian forces that landed on Juno Beach on D-Day. “The sea was rough,” he recalled. “We were more afraid of drowning than the Germans.”

The Canadians crossed a minefield laid for tanks; the soldiers weren’t heavy enough to detonate the bombs. At 11:30 that night, he was machine-gunned, taking six hits: one that took off his middle right finger (he managed to hide the missing finger on the screen), four in his leg and one in the chest. Fortunately the chest bullet was stopped by his silver cigarette case.

Thank you Scotty for that too

I wonder how many young boys and girls, after having watched Scottie solve another seemingly intractable problem, decided to become an engineer?

And I wonder how many adults decided to do so?

29. LOL - so true :-)
The Star Trek series viewer always knew when "Captain's Deck Regulars" were beamed down with a Red Shirt (security/engineering) team ---> THAT all those guys were goners. The only guess was how they would be taken out.

Too funny - and true!

30. Damn-I knew him personally
We spent a week together years ago (long story-nothing illicit), then I saw him again more recently. Very sad-but I know that Jimmy would prefer to go now rather than wait around for the Alzheimer's to destroy him completely.

Rest in peace, friend.

Maybe it's just his character that I loved so much, but I would have like to talk w/him about his character.

btw-love your ID. Is it from LOTR?

33. Actually, we mostly talked about childhood, Canada, war,
good food, great movies, etc. The real shame is that it was such a long time ago that I can't remember the specifics of our conversations. Maybe I'll ask my mom; he met her and was rather smitten-they went out to dinner once or twice.

Yeah, the username is the elvish word for "golden" from LOTR (I'm a natural blonde ;-) ).

41. Scotty was a classic
I still think my favorite "Scotty" moment was from Star Trek IV. When him and Bones went to the plastics plant and he starts to use a computer. At first he starts talking to it, "hello computer", then the plant manager hands him a mouse. He picks up the mouse and starts talking to that, "hello computer", then the plant manager points to the keyboard and he goes, "ahh the keyboard, how quant."

I never realised that he was a WWII vet. Was really impressed by the fact he did hide his missing finger from the screen.

Godspeed James.

42. great guy, so sad
I went to a trek convention in the early 80s with James Doohan as the guest speaker. I was in line to get his autograph, and when it was my turn I asked the person in line behind me to take a photo with my camera. Mr. Doohan looked up and said "Oh, you want a picture, come around here with me." He invited me around the table and onto his knee for the photo. I still have that picture and his autograph.

We'll miss you Scotty.
