Forty-nine killed in three Red Sea bombs - governor

Source: Reuters

CAIRO, July 23 (Reuters) - Forty-nine people were killed in two car bombs and another explosion in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on Saturday, the governor said.

Mustafa Afifi, governor of South Sinai province, said one car bomb exploded in front of the Ghazala Hotel in Naama Bay, the site of most of the resort's luxury hotels. He was quoted by the state news agency MENA.

Another car bomb exploded in the old market in Sharm el-Sheikh town, about six km (four miles) from Naama Bay. "The third explosion, in a car park at the entrance to Naama Bay, could have been a bag of explosions," he added. (Writing by Jonathan Wright, Cairo bureau: +20-2-578-3290/1))

Not that it should matter, but this is a huge tourist spot. Reports are saying casulatires included people from Britain, the Netherlands, Qatar, Kuwait and Egypt,

5. I heard 7 bombs there and they're sorting out the numbers.

I fear this will be another Bali tourist bombing-type incident, but I don't understand why. Put the fear into the tourists?
I hope your family is safe.
And I also say fuck you, Bush; you've done irreparable damage.

Edit to add: 36 killed so far, over 150 injured, just heard on the news (well, Fox, but that's where I heard it).

7. So Who's REALLY doing these bombings?
Is it muslim extremists, BushCo people, criminals looking for a diversin to commit robberies and other crimes? Have there been more bombings this week than usual, or is it just that we're more attuned than usual because of what happened in London??..

9. Well, if you know all about this, please enlighten me as
I'm puzzled. Why were parts of Egypt attacked, and by who(m)?

13. There are some posh resorts
on the red sea coast. Think "hawaii"... you know, where the tourists
stay in appearant idyll, whilst the locals are enslaved to kiss ass at
the hotels, living in less appealing circumstances on the other side of
the island.

I remember how, in visiting egypt, that it was dangerous to be off the
tourist reservation... that poverty and repression has bred a hate of
western european-anglo types. Outside of cairo, i watched a german
tourist photograph a man using an archemides screw to irrigate his field.
When the man saw this, he ran to the bus and demanded money, and when
the bus started to drive away, he leaped in to the window to grab the
man's camera... and this tustle of unbridled hostility ensued.

It is totally understandable how al queda has bred so many of its
muslim brotherhood in egypt. French, and British colonialism has left
the country trashed and the subsequent dictatorship(s), are like an
occupying army on a poor and oppressed people.

But hey, they've got warm weather. Its a pressure cooker that, and
until there is true democratic reform, justice will bubble out in
revolutionary bombings and whatnot... just george washington and his
chums doing their jobs.
