Change foreign policy - top Muslims

Senior Muslims have warned the Government that it needed to revise British foreign policy if it wants to put an end to the violence.

Dr Azzam Tamimi, from the Muslim Association of Britain, said the country was in real danger and that this would continue so long as British forces remained in Iraq.

He described the July 7 bombings and the attempted attacks in London on Thursday as "horrifying" but said it was not enough to simply unite in condemnation of the bombers.

Dr Tamimi, speaking after a Sky News debate in Birmingham, said: "The latest developments very clearly show this is a very big thing. It's not just a few individuals from Leeds. I think it's time everybody got serious and engaged in an attempt to prevent it. Part of that would be to understand what's going on.

"7/7, 21/7, and God knows what will happen afterwards, our lives are in real danger and it would seem, so long as we are in Iraq and so long as we are contributing to injustices around the world, we will continue to be in real danger.

6. Killing of 25,000 Iraqi civilians springs to mind
I believe it was a British organization that compiled the figures, based on media reports, etc. About a third of the deaths were attributed to the American/British soldiers. These people would most likely be alive today if the US hadn't started an illegal war and then bungled it, protecting oil fields instead of securing the country.

The way prisoners are being treated in Gitmo and Iraqi prisons is another concern. The distain with which the Qur'an has been allegedly treated is another reason.

Finally, the way all Muslims are being treated by some people is, indeed, a strain. Mosques have been the target of attacks or threats of attacks; Muslims have been discriminated against (picked up or stopped for no reason other than their appearance; last year there was a detailed account of one of these events in muslimwakeup.com) and threatened (one idiot threatened to kill my husband because of his religion; my boss has said he'd deport all Muslims and never hire one-luckily I'm a convert who doesn't broadcast my religious affiliation). This sort of intimidation and hatred has a wearing effect on people, and can make many angry. I choose to work on forgiveness of the ignorant (like the CO Congressman who thought bombing Mecca is a good idea if terrorists strike the US again-though some here have discounted it as ravings of a nutcase, rest assured his words are taken seriously by many) and to work for peace and justice in a non-violent way. But you have to see how all these things can be used by al Qaeda as recruiting tools.
