87 verses 144 images : Abu Ghraib and Fuzzy Math
144 June 3, 2005 and before the 11th hour delay tactic

"In his ruling Wednesday, US District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein gave the military until June 30 to prepare the 144 pictures and four videotapes by hiding or obscuring the faces of the detainees. The images were obtained by an Army soldier who helped uncover the abuse scandal"

"Judge Alvin Hellerstein said the 144 pictures and videos can be turned over in redacted form to protect the victims' identities. He gave the Army one month to release them. "

87 images July 22, 2005 and after the 11th hour delay tactic

NEW YORK So what is shown on the 87 photographs and four videos from Abu Ghraib prison that the Pentagon, in an eleventh hour move, blocked from release this weekend?

http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000990590

"But the material that the judge ordered released -- the ACLU says there are 87 photographs and four videos -- would be the first images released in the suit. The judge said they would be the "best evidence" in the debate about the treatment of Abu Ghraib prisoners."

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/c/a/2005/07/23/MNGC6DSK7Q1.DTL

So which is it? 144 images and 4 videos OR 87 images and 4 videos?

If you notice the last quote, the ACLU says the 87 images and 4 videos would be the first released in the suit..meaning there are more images not being released (yet). So the remainder will be released when?

I'm not saying the problem lies with the ACLU...I'm just saying we need to watch this because there is a BIG difference between 87 and 144..and the government might try and get away with releasing just some of the evidence instead of all (and claim they released all)....IF they release any period, that is...and that's a really BIG IF so far...but still...

I don't want the number 87 to stick in peoples mind when 144 was the original number of pictures to be released.

3. I don't really know what it means either but the number did change
and that's what caught my attention.

From earlier stories I didn't notice there being a 2 stage release...(some now, some later) just the 144 total w/ 4 videos... and now that seems to have changed.

6. I suspect this is one of those "Activist Judges" the GOP wants punished
The Bush* Cabal ignores all Laws and procedures it wants and says "What ya gunna do about it?"

4. I was not aware of the 144 number...
thanks for bringing us up to speed. I just wrote Sen. Levin to apply some pressure about this issue. I will also be making a donation to the ACLU.

It is my opinion that by redacting the photos and obscuring the faces of the victims it will lessen the impact of these images. I don't really believe that it is to protect the victims and their families. It is to protect the goddamned Bush Administration.
