Serious question: What does "Turd Blossom" mean?

I know it is Bush's nickname for Rove but there must be some story behind it. What is its genesis? Does anyone know?

I keep hearing this explanation, but in fifty years of living around Texas cow shit, I've never seen flowers growing out of it. Never ran across any such plant in my graduate botany classes either. The only thing that grows out of bovine manure is psilocybin mushrooms.

I think the explanation offered by Helen Thomas of a turd blossom being a juicy cow splat is much more likely--and fitting.

Is a term of endearment in the south. It is never really used in a harmful manner. Not sure about origins, but it is common throughout the south. Nor is it any new word or nickname, it's a pretty old moniker.
