ACLU Alert- New Docs released detailing abuse at Gitmo
Government Releases New Documents Detailing Abuse at Guantánamo Bay

July 27, 2005

Pentagon Still Keeping Information from Public, ACLU Charges

NEW YORK -- The American Civil Liberties Union today released files obtained from the Defense Department revealing new details on investigations into abuse at the Guantánamo Bay Detention Center. The files also appear to indicate a rift between personnel at the base over interrogation techniques.

"These new documents provide vivid descriptions of how interrogation techniques approved by Rumsfeld constituted serious abuse in some instances," said ACLU Executive Director Anthony D. Romero. "There’s no denying that these approved techniques went too far and that the military knew full well how they were being used on detainees."

9. A Few Thoughts:
1) If I scanned in a 139 page document at this quality where I work (a law firm) I would be calling my local unemployment office the next day.

2) Every third page is about someone going to the bathroom.

3) It's going to take a while to plow through all of this.

I am about halfway through (skimming). So far from what my poor eyes can fathom, much of it appears to be about an obsessive amount of upper command concern and desire to punish and dismiss? a whistleblower interrogator they feel "jumped the chain of command" to report mistreatment of a particular detainee and other concerns about others in general. They are labeling him with "Reverse Stockholm Syndrome" (Handy, huh? The abuse being alleged denial of use of latrine, setting cell temp to 52 degrees, and denial of food....

skipping ahead-- the account of an investigation into the practice of some physically brutal technique called "Fear Up Harsh" and examination of a detainee'sinjuries. Guards at the door even demanding "What the Hell is going on in there!?"

20. Here's one passage I found, transcribed, and will comment on.
The allegation by states, ". . . they pushed in the back of the detainee's knees with their knees, taking the detainee to his knees. Then holding the detainee by the upper arms they slammed his upper body to the floor. During his interview, he stated that the floor was shaking wish such force that as well as the next booth over were shaking. stated that as the detainee was forced to tehfloor, he turned his head so the side of his face was hitting the floor. He further states that the force being used on the detainee caused great concern for the detainee's safety. soon exited the building to call his supervisor, . verbal and written statements corroborate allegation that the MPs pushed the detainee to the floor, by applying force to the back of his knees, in a violent manner. She estimated this activity happened approximately 18 times, but was unsure of the precise count. She corroborated the intensity fo the shaking of the reported that she saw of the detainee each time he was forced to the ground. She further stated that she witnessed and laughing while this activity was taking place. There is no doubt that both and believe that the interrogator was frustrated and took his frustrations out on the detainee and that this was not a professional interrogation.

-------------------------------------------

For the most part, the fillers simply protect the identities and names of the people involved. However, there is one instance here where the fillers are clearly there to hide specifics about the abuse:

-------------------------------------------

She corroborated the intensity fo the shaking of the reported that she saw of the detainee each time he was forced to the ground.

-------------------------------------------

The shaking of the what? The floor? The cell? The rest of the furniture in the room? Though the real scary edit is the next one. What did she see of the detainee each time he was forced to the ground? Unless she spoted some sort of physical damage (excessive blood, previous scars and bruising, etc) I can't imagine what in the hell would fit in those blanks. If these people didn't hate us before, they sure as fuck hate us now.
