I'd go thumb.

After looking more carefully at the picture ( I HAVE NOT seen the video), but solely by the picture it looks like it is a thumb and the part of the hand to the left of the raised digit is his other four fingers curled down.

IF it is a thumb, he has one WHOPPER of a thumb, because looking at my hand in the position I described above, my thumb looks tiny compared to his, and I am not small by any means, not big either though.

Personally, I HOPE it is the finger!

What you see to the right of his extended digit is the third knuckle of his index finger -- what you see to the left of his extended digit is the second knuckle of his index finger. His four fingers are tucked into his palm and the thumb happens to be sticking up in the middle so that it appears to be a middle finger.

The still shot is deceiving, but if you go frame-by-frame in the video, the last frame when he lowers his hand shows that it is his thumb.

He flips the American people the bird every day with his policy decisions -- but in this case, alas, I think its just a thumb.

the question the reporter asked, although I don't remember what the question was, a thumbs up would make more sense than a finger. I vote it's a thumb, although I wish it was his finger.

Viewed frame-by-frame as he puts his arm back down, you can pretty clearly see that it's a thumb.

If you look at the knuckles, it's clearly his middle finger. And NO thumb is that length, from any angle.

use you left arrow / right arrow to advance frame by frame and reverse it. There are 19 frames that his hand is up with the gesture.

Based on this picture, there is NO WAY that's a thumb. A pen, maybe. I have no idea what all this vehement "it's a thumb!" stuff is all about. :crazy:

or possibly a pen. The key is the position on the hand. It looks to me like there's exactly enough space for an index finger on the left and the two smaller digits on the right.

Is there a full video available on the Internet like the one they showed on Leno? On Leno last night, they showed the video clip of Bush arriving in a hallway, walking towards and then past the press and the cameras. It was as he walked past and turned down a hallway with his back to the cameras that he appeared to flip the bird. I only saw it once last night on Leno and didn't notice if you could see his hands or whether he had anything in them as he walked past the cameras. Anyone notice? If his hands were empty, then it has to be a finger.

Therefore, regardless of what I think it is (I think it's a thumb or a pen), I'm going to make sure I spread it far and wide that the president (gasp) flipped us off.
