TPM: GOP positioning to can Fitzgerald
Late this evening I got emails from a few readers who told me about a news story on Chicago's Channel 9, WGN-TV which pointed out that Patrick Fitzgerald's term as US Attorney in Chicago is coming up in October and that pressure is building to deny him a reappointment.

As it was described to me, the news segment featured an interview with former Sen. Peter Fitzgerald (R)(no relation), who suggested that Denny Hastert might be pushing to turn Fitzgerald out of his job.

1. "Fired for doing his job" should be the mantra on this one. nt

5. This would
not have any effect on the Plame case. It's two separate things.

12. To punish him
for doing what he is doing on the Plame case. It isn't going to be a problem. They can only injure themselves right now.

19. Question...
Will handing down indictments automatically necessitate his, at least temporary, reinstatement?

Or will he need to make his case to stay in office?

4. Bingo!!! Several days ago, I pointed out the media's
sudden interest in Figerald's biographical information as being curious. The guy has been doing his job for quite a while now. My note was dismissed as part of the normal development of a news story by a lazy media. SOMEONE put that out there. All the media started addressing it at the same time within the same news cycle. In *world, this happens for a reason.

11. I think the fact that the Repugs want to launch an investigation
of him is a sign they want to get rid of him.

7. Am confident Larry Johnson and all the Company men have thought about
the probablilty of it coming down. Am confident they have worked out the moves so ahead of the GOP Rubber Stamp Congress that their heads will keep spinning.

Rove is not an idiot, nor is Cheney. But there are more brains among the itel folks who have every reason to play the long game and win.

It would be annoying, but porbably more damaging if they can him than if they STFU and go with the flow. All stonewalling does is create more damage when the dam breaks, and it always does.

14. "Saturday Night Massacre" anyone? Oh please, I dare them.
Between repeating Watergate type shenanigans and pissing off the CIA, this administration has a serious "invincibility" complex.

It's like the Roman Empire being redone as a spaghetti western.

23. I understand your point
but the atmosphere in the country is so different now from Nixon's time. That became a true scandal. I fear now it would read for a day or two or three in the news and disappear. Bush would perhaps put in a new prosecutor and then it would take a year for the new one to get up to speed and it would be prolonged for so long it would die itself without a whimper.
